BFCA Critics Choice Movie Awards - winners

The Broadcast Film Critics Association held their 17th annual Critics Choice Awards tonight at the Hollywood Palladium.

The Artist came out on top, claiming Best Picture. It also won Best Director for Michel Hazanavicius, as well as Costume Design and Score. It had led with 11 nominations along with Martin Scorsese's Hugo.

Hugo, however, was recognized only for Best Art Direction. But Martin Scorsese was presented with the Music + Film Award for his work in both fields. In addition, his documentary George Harrison: Living in the Material World won that category.

The Help was a big winner for acting, taking Best Actress (Viola Davis), Best Supporting Actress (Octavia Spencer) and Best Acting Ensemble. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 was the only other multiple winner, taking awards for Sound and Makeup.

Otherwise, the awards were spread around evenly all over. George Clooney won Best Actor for The Descendants, while Canada's Christopher Plummer won Best Supporting Actor for Beginners. The Best Young Actor was Thomas Horn with his debut role in Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close.

Interestingly, there was a tie for Cinematography between Emmanuel Lubezki for The Tree of Life and Janusz Kaminski for War Horse.

A Separation was named Best Foreign movie while Rango was a somewhat surprising winner for Animated Feature. Best Comedy was BridesmaidsDrive was named Best Action Movie.

The Joel Siegel Humanitarian Award went to Sean Penn for his work on behalf of Haiti. He was not able to attend because he is in Haiti at the moment but delivered an acceptance speech via satellite.

The Broadcast Film Critics Association consists of over 250 television, radio and Internet critics and is the largest organization of film critics in the United States.
