The BAFTA 2012 longlist

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) announced the longlist for their 2012 Orange British Academy Film Awards, commonly known as the BAFTA Awards.

My Week With Marilyn and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy lead with 16 mentions each. They are followed by The Iron Lady with 14. The Artist, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, Midnight in Paris and War Horse each received 13 mentions, while The Help and Hugo received 12; Drive, The Ides of March and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2 took 11, and We Need to Talk About Kevin managed 10.

Each of the mentiones for these films included Best Film with the exception of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2. Rounding out the Best Film selection were The Descendants, Moneyball and Senna.

The longlist was produced by a round of voting by the Academy's more than 6300 members to take the 285 films entered to select 15 eligible films in each category. The exceptions are with the Outstanding Debut by a Writer, Director or Producer, Short Film and Short Animation categories in which longlists are not announced, and the Animated Film and Documentary categories in which five films are longlisted.

Round Two voting begins today and will reduce the 15 contenders down to the eventual five nominations in each category. For Animated Film and Documentary, the longlist of five films will be narrowed to three nominations each. The third round of voting will decide the eventual award winners.

All members vote in the first two rounds for all categories barring Documentary, Film Not in the English Language and Outstanding British Film, which are voted for by Chapters. The asterisks in the Longlist denote the top five selection of the relevant Chapter (a group of over 80 members with specialist skills or experience in a particular craft area). In the final round, winners are voted for by specialist Chapters in all categories except for Best Film, Outstanding British Film, Documentary and Film Not in the English Language and the four performance categories, which are voted for by all members.

Nominations in all categories will be announced on Tuesday 17 January. The winners will be announced at the Orange British Academy Film Awards on Sunday 12 February.
