2012 Blue Metropolis Festival, April 18–23

The 14th edition of the literary festival Blue Metropolis starts today in Montreal. This year, they will be centred at Hôtel Opus at 10 Sherbrooke St. W. on the corner of St-Laurent. The festival will host 156 activities from 10 countries and in 5 languages.

Highlights of the festival include Arab Prize Winner, UK/Egyptian writer Ahdaf Soueif in conversation with CBC's Paul Kennedy; Esi Edugyan on stage with CBC's Shelagh Rogers; Cuban writing with Leonardo Padura, Wendy Guerra and Eduardo Manet; Crime writing with crime writers from Canada, Spain, Cuba, and the US; Two staged events featuring the work of Irving Layton and Saint-Denys Garneau; Writing from Newfoundland with Paul Kennedy; and Face to Face with Colombian writer Juan Gabriel Vasquez.

For the fifth year, Blue Met will also be hosting a parallel Children's Festival at 55 venues (libraries, cultural and community centres) with over 60 free activities for the whole family.

The Grand Prize winner for 2012 is Joyce Carol Oates. Ms. Oates will do two events this year as part of the festival – an on-stage interview with CBC's Eleanor Wachtel and an on-stage discussion about her crime novels with writer Jack Kirchoff.

The Blue Metropolis Festival runs April 18 to 23. Most events take place at Hôtel Opus, 10 Sherbrooke St. West.

TD-Blue Met Children’s Festival is 5 Years Old!
Appearing at 55 Venues Near You

Montreal, March 20 2012 – From April 18 to 23, Blue Metropolis Foundation proudly presents a variety of activities that is sure to awaken a passion for reading and writing in Montreal children age 12 and under. For the last five years, this festival has provided a stage where authors, illustrators and performers can interact with children and their parents, as well as with kindergarten and elementary school students and their teachers.

"The Children's Festival brings together the very best in children's literature,” says David Pinsonneault, District Senior Vice‐President, Commercial Banking and Team Quebec Vice‐Chair. “By uniting artists from all walks of life, we hope to provide children with unforgettable experiences that will instill in them a lifelong love of reading. TD is pleased to support early literacy in this way.”

New this year: nine shows added to our programme of over 60 free activities for the whole family

Thanks to the unfailing support of the TD Bank Group, 55 venues (libraries, cultural and community centres) will present these events, hosted by professional literary artists and illustrators, including nine free shows for the whole family! Across the city, theatre, storytelling and writing workshops will all share the spotlight: Samsara; Une lettre pour moi !; Les femmes pirates ; Petit lièvre et ses cousins; Karius et Baktus; La reine de Kémet; Kamba la petite fille du Kassaï; Et Dieu créa les animaux à son image; and last but not least, Festilou, un marathon de contes. We have a little something for everyone!

Several well-known children’s authors and illustrators will be present, such as Marianne Dubuc, finalist for the 2011 TD Award and for the Semaine de la bibliothèque’s YA Award, presenting her clever show Devant ma maison, aimed at younger children; Caroline Merola, Édith Bourget and their splendid Oh ! La vache !; renowned illustrators Philippe Beha, Benoît Laverdière and Yayo; Angèle Delaunois, speaking about contemporary issues of interest to kids; Linda Wilscam, the actress behind Picotine, who stars in L’Homme aux Ballons; and prolific author-illustrator Gilles Tibo, who entertains us with his vampire stories! Finally, Sylvain Rivard presents a First Nation’s legend, Moz en cinq temps, and Myriame El Yamani takes us on a voyage around the world with her evocative and powerful tales.

For our young English-speaking audience, there will be laughs and crafts with 26 Tips for Surviving Grade 6, a comedy by Catherine Austen; Jane Barclay entertains younger kids with Jojo, the Giant; Karen Patkau transmits her passion for nature with her magnificent Ecosystem Series; and Mahtab Narsimhan, originally from India, tells the story of The Tiffin, about Kunal, a young man from Mumbai who seeks to regain control of his destiny.

In addition, several special partnerships have made possible a number of paid shows, such as Jacques et le haricot magique at l’Illusion, a haiku writing workshop at the Enpuku-ji Zen Center, and La Reine de Kémet at the Addydanse Studio.
