Inaugural Golden Collar Awards - winners

Dog News Daily held a ceremony for their first ever Golden Collar Awards last night at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles.

As most expected, the event's top dog was Uggie from The Artist, winning Best Dog in a Theatrical Film. He was also nominated for Water for Elephants and fended off Cosmo from Beginners, Denver from 50/50, and Hummer from Young Adult. Martin Scorsese had successfully petitioned to have Blackie from Hugo added to the ballot, but all to no avail.

Koko who played Red Dog in the movie Red Dog won for Best Dog in a Foreign Film. He had been competing against Laika of Le Havre, and Biina and Ichico who were both in The Day The Dogs Disappeared.

Other winners were Rody claiming Best Dog in a Direct-to-DVD Film for Marley & Me: The Puppy Years; Brigitte taking Best Dog in a Television Series for Modern Family; and a tie between Hercules of Pit Boss and Giggy in The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills for Best Dog in a Reality Television Series.

Honourary awards were presented to actress Charlize Theron and director Michael Vance.

The winners were decided by fourteen editors, producers and journalists from media such as Entertainment Tonight, Newsweek, Variety, The Hollywood Reporter and The Wrap.

This award is a good bit of fun, but there had been many who quite seriously suggested that Uggie and others should have been given serious consideration for acting honours at awards such as the Oscars. Of course, that would be ridiculous since dogs cannot act (they don't learn lines, research their character, emote on cue, etc.) and are really just trained to do tricks on command. What they'd really be rewarding is the trainer and the overall cuteness factor of the dog and the written part.

That's what has happened here as Uggie was the same dog in both nominated movies but had a better part in The Artist which won. Reality TV dogs don't to anything in particular that makes them worthy of an award other than appear on camera.
