Call for submissions: Tarragon Emerging Playwrights’ Competition

RBC Tarragon Emerging Playwrights’ Competition

On the heels of last year’s overwhelming success, Tarragon Theatre is pleased to partner with RBC Foundation once more in offering the 4th Annual RBC Tarragon Emerging Playwrights’ Competition. Tarragon has long been committed to fostering new work and developing new Canadian voices. In keeping with this commitment, the competition offers emerging playwrights financial support to further develop their plays, the opportunity to work with skilled artists in new play development, and the chance to showcase their work on a national level.

The Tarragon will consider full-length plays (min. 80 minutes) written in English by Canadian citizens or permanent residents. To qualify, a playwright must be emerging, which is defined as someone with less than five years of professional playwriting experience.

For the purposes of this contest, we describe a professional playwright as someone who:

  • Has developed skills through specialized training and/or practice.
  • Is recognized as such by peers (artists working in the same artistic tradition).
  • Actively practices his or her art.
  • Seeks payment for her or his work.
  • Has a history of public presentation or publication.
  • Short breaks in work history (eg. for school) are permitted.

  • The competition’s winner will receive a cash prize of $3,000, the opportunity to showcase their play in Tarragon Theatre’s Play Reading Week 2013, and a year’s worth of dramaturgical support from Tarragon Theatre’s literary manager.

All application packages must arrive at Tarragon Theatre by Friday, April 27, 2012 at 5:00 pm.

Please read the Contest Guidelines carefully. Incomplete applications will not be accepted.
