All of the feature films programmed are by first-time filmmakers. Hors les murs (Beyond the Walls) is a Canadian co-production made with Belgium and France. The only American representation is the Spain/U.S./Mexico co-production Aquí y allá by Antonio Méndez Esparza.
The only English-language selection is the opening night film Broken by Rufus Norris. It stars Tim Roth and Cillian Murphy and is based on the novel by Daniel Clay. It plays out of competition.
The Competition Features are also all directed by men. Two features by women – Augustine by Alice Winocour and J’enrage de son absence (Furious at his Absence) by Sandrine Bonnaire – will play out-of-competition as Special Screenings. This is Bonnaire's second film but her first fictional feature. She made the 2007 documentary Elle s'appelle Sabine (Her Name is Sabine) about her autistic sister.
The closing night film is to be announced.
La Semaine de la Critique runs from May 17-25 at Cannes. The 65th Festival de Cannes takes place from May 16 to 27, 2012.
