2012 GLAAD Media Awards in New York – winners

Last night, the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) held the first of its three ceremonies their 23rd Annual GLAAD Media Awards. Glee stars Naya Rivera and Cory Monteith hosted the event.

The winner for Outstanding Film – Limited Release was the small indie film Pariah. The film by Dee Rees is about a 17-year old African-American teenager Alike (played by Adepero Oduye) who embraces her identity as a lesbian. The award was accepted by the film's stars Oduye and Kim Wayans, as well as producer Nekisa Cooper.

Television winners included the shows Dancing with the Stars, ABC World News with Diane Sawyer, Cinema Verite, The Oprah Winfrey Show and Anderson Cooper 360.

The Vito Russo Award was presented to film, television, and theater producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron by Bernadette Peters and John Stamos. Productions by Zadan and Meron include Chicago, Hairspray and Smash.

A Special Recognition Award was presented to openly gay high school student Katy Butler by outspoken anti-bullying advocate Harvey Weinstein. Butler was responsible for launching a Change.org campaign to appeal the 'R' rating of the upcoming documentary Bully and have it lowered to 'PG-13.' The campaign has received about half a million signatures.

The 23rd Annual GLAAD Media Awards series will continue in Los Angeles on April 21, 2012, and later in San Francisco on June 2, 2012.
