2012 Asian Film Awards – winners


The Hong Kong International Film Festival Society hosted the 6th Annual Asian Film Awards today at the at Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre Grand Hall. The 6th AFA is one of the Opening Gala events of Entertainment Expo Hong Kong that includes the 36th Hong Kong International Film Festival (HKIFF), and the 10th Hong Kong – Asia Film Financing Forum (HAF).

Oscar-winning Iranian film جدایی نادر از سیمین (Nader and Simin, A Separation) by Asghar Farhadi was the night's biggest winner. It won four of its five nominations, taking Best Film, Director, Editor and Screenwriter. This continues its spectacular yearlong awards winning streak which began with the Golden Bear Award at the 2011 Berlinale.

武俠 (Wu Xia) was next with three awards. It picked up prizes for Cinematographer, Production Designer and Composer. Production Designer 奚仲文 (Yee Chung-man) also picked up a second award at for Costume Design for 龍門飛甲 (The Flying Swords of Dragon Gate).

Tsui Hark's 龍門飛甲 (The Flying Swords of Dragon Gate) had led with seven nominations including Best Film and Director. Other than Costume Design, its only other win was for Visual Effects.

A Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to 許鞍華 (Ann Hui On-Wah). Her film 桃姐 (A Simple Life) won Best Actress for star 葉德嫻 (Deanie Ip) and the People's Choice Award – Best Actor for 劉德華 (Andy Lau). The People's Choice Award winner – Best Actress was Eugene Domingo for The Woman in the Septic Tank. The Edward Yang New Talent Award went to Kebun Binatang (Postcards From The Zoo) director Edwin from Indonesia.

The Top-Grossing Asian Film was 让子弹飞 (Let the Bullets Fly) by 姜文 (Jiang Wen). Not only did it set the record for the biggest box office of any Asian film of 2011, but also as the highest grossing Chinese-language film of all time. In just over a month, the film took 730 million yuan (approximately US$115 million).

The jury president was Eric Khoo from Singapore. The rest of the jury consisted of Ronald Arguelles (Head, Cinema One); John Badalu (Founder, Q! Film Festival, Moon Water Film Festival, and Slingshort Film Festival); Patricia Cheng (Producer, Red on Red); Peggy Chiao (Producer, ARC Light Films); Cho Young-jung (Programmer in charge of Asian Cinema, Busan International Film Festival); Ishizaka Kenji (Programming Director, Tokyo International Film Festival); Christian Jeune (Deputy General Delegate, Cannes International Film Festival); Kong Rithdee (Film Critic, The Bangkok Post); Christoph Terhechte (Director of the Forum section, Berlin International Film Festival); Jacob Wong (Curator, Hong Kong International Film Festival; Director, Hong Kong Asia Film Financing Forum); and Xie Fei (Professor, Beijing Film Academy).
