Ceremony to Take Place February 20, 2016 at Paramount Studios, Johnny Depp to Present Lifetime Achievement Awards

Nominees for the Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild Awards (MUAHS, IATSE Local 706) in 23 categories honoring make-up artists and hair stylists outstanding achievements in motion pictures, television, commercials and live theater were announced today by MUAHS President Sue Cabral-Ebert. Winners will be revealed during the black-tie annual MUAHS Guild Awards ceremony, hosted by comedian Loni Love, on Saturday, February 20, 2016 at Paramount Studios. M.A.C. Cosmetics is the official host of the cocktail party.

36th Annual Dora Mavor Moore Awards – winners

Canadian Opera Company Leads the Field with 8 Wins: 5 for Falstaff including Outstanding Production and 3 for Die Walküre including Outstanding Direction to Atom Egoyan

The 36th Annual Dora Mavor Moore Awards for the 2014/2015 season were handed out in a star-studded ceremony in Toronto on the evening of Monday, June 22 at Harbourfront Centre’s WestJet Stage, hosted by the hilarious Gavin Crawford, whose eight seasons on CBC-TV's This Hour Has 22 Minutes earned him numerous accolades and who recently won an ACTRA Award for his leading role in the film Two 4 One.

The Dora Mavor Moore Awards are produced and presented by the Toronto Alliance for the Performing Arts (TAPA) and celebrate excellence in Toronto theatre, dance and opera. For the 2014-2015 season, 117 producing companies registered 212 eligible productions. A total of 48 Dora Awards plus the Silver Ticket Award and the Audience Choice Award were given out.

Festival Accès Asie, running from May 1st to 24th, is proud to announce its 20th Anniversary edition! Khosro Berahmandi, General Manager and Artistic Director of the Festival, has prepared an incredible program featuring a wide range of artistic disciplines that will definitely please Asian culture lovers. Festival Accès Asie welcomes actress, Alice Tran (Lance et compte, 30 vies), as its spokesperson for our 20th anniversary celebration.

Included in this edition are 16 artistic events, many of which have been exclusively created for the Festival. To show its appreciation to Accès Asie artist members for their ongoing commitment to the development of the Festival over the years, five artists from the Festival’s Board were invited to create works for this year’s edition. We are very pleased to include these works in our 20th Anniversary program.

The Festival kicks off with our famous Opening Cocktail at which we will reveal the 20th Anniversary Edition program. The first week will feature Kaleidoscope, an exhibition by Kiran Ambwani and Florence So, presenting 20 artists who have appeared in the Festival over the past 20 years. The Festival also invites the public to take part in an open forum Discussion on Asian Heritage in Quebec featuring an exciting panel of Festival artists.

Writer/Director John Patrick Shanley on Adaptation and his Creative Process

On the heels of the world premiere announcement of A Woman is a Secret, the new play written by John Patrick Shanley, the Canadian Film Centre (CFC), is pleased to present An Evening with Academy Award-Winning Writer/Director John Patrick Shanley on Adaptation and his Creative Process.

Taking place on Monday, March 23, 2015 at TIFF Bell Lightbox in Toronto, Shanley will take the stage to discuss writing for the screen versus writing for the stage, the challenges associated with adapting work for the screen as both a writer and a director, as well as his experience with casting, working with other directors and producers, and future adaptations of his plays.

The awards took place before an audience of more than 500, including guild members, industry executives and press. Golden Globe®-winner Ron Perlman (Sons of Anarchy)presented the Distinguished Artisan Award to his longtime friend and collaborator Guillermo Del Toro (Crimson Peak). Acclaimed director John Landis presented the Make-Up Artist Lifetime Achievement Award to Oscar®-winning make-up legend Rick Baker. Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) President Cheryl Boone Isaacs presented the Hair Stylist Lifetime Achievement Award to Emmy® Award-winning hair stylist Kathryn Blondell.

Casting Society of America's 30th Annual Artios Awards – winners

The Casting Society of America (CSA) has named the winners for the 30th Annual Artios Awards, which took place tonight in both Los Angeles at the Beverly Hilton and in New York at 42WEST (formerly XL Nightclub), Cabaret & Lounge. Performers Patton Oswalt and Michael Urie hosted in Los Angeles and New York, respectively. This is the first year that the Artios Awards was moved to January to take place during the height of awards season.

Hosted by Michael Urie, New York presenters included Frankie Alvarez, Nina Arianda, Murray Bartlett, Jason Biggs, Raul Castillo, Carrie Coon, Edie Falco, Renee Fleming, Jonathan Groff, Gaby Hoffmann, Billy Magnussen, Cristin Milioti, Jay Pharoah, Danny Pino, AnnaSophia Robb, Jeremy Shamos, Cecily Strong and Lorraine Toussaint.

The Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild today announced nominations in 19 categories honoring make-up artists and hair stylists outstanding achievements in motion pictures, television, commercials and live theater.

President Sue Cabral-Ebert announced the nominations. Winners will be revealed during the black-tie 2015 Annual MUAHS Guild Awards ceremony taking place on Saturday, February 14, 2015 at Paramount Studios. The MUAHS Awards after-party is courtesy of M.A.C. Cosmetics. Spirits presented will be presented by Patron Tequila.

The Casting Society of America (CSA) has unveiled its feature film nominees for the 30th Annual Artios Awards. Rage and Ecstasy is the title and theme of this year’s Kitchen Playwriting Unit for emerging Asian Canadian playwrights who are interested in honing their playwriting skills. This year the unit will be directed by Dramaturg Andrew Cheng, and will be working towards each participant creating their own original piece.

Johnny Depp received the Guild's Distinguished Artisan Award presented by Oscar-Winning Make-Up Artist Joel Harlow, who is currently nominated for an Academy Award for his artistry in The Lone Ranger and also worked on creating Depp's transformation in The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Oscar-winner Gail Ryan was presented with the Hair Stylists Lifetime Achievement Award by Benicio Del Toro and Rick Baker presented the Make-Up Artists Lifetime Achievement Award to Oscar-winner Dick Smith who was unable to attend.

CBC's Glenn Gould Studio announced as Toronto International Film Festival venue

TORONTO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL PARTNERS WITH CBC TO BRING IN GLENN GOULD STUDIO AS NEW VENUE FOR 2013

Tarragon Theatre and the RBC Foundation are pleased to announce the fifth annual RBC Tarragon Emerging Playwrights’ Competition, one of Canada’s most prestigious contests for new artists. Since 2008, this national competition has received applications from every corner of the country. Tarragon and the RBC Foundation believe in investing in Canadian playwrights: through meaningful support we help them gain national recognition for their writing and look for the next Canadian voice to add to the national canon.

Tarragon will consider full-length plays (min. 80 minutes) written in English by Canadian citizens or permanent residents. To qualify, a playwright must be emerging, which is defined as someone with less than five years of professional playwriting experience. See contest guidelines for details:

2013 Governor General’s Performing Arts Awards laureates announced

MONTREAL, April 10, 2013 – Andrew Dawes, Daniel Lanois, Jean Pierre Lefebvre, Viola Léger, Eric Peterson and Menaka Thakkar have been named the 2013 laureates of the prestigious Governor General’s Performing Arts Awards (GGPAA) for Lifetime Artistic Achievement. The Lifetime Artistic Achievement Awards are accompanied by two special awards, the Ramon John Hnatyshyn Award for Voluntarism in the Performing Arts is given this year to Jean Pierre Desrosiers and Sarah Polley will receive the National Arts Centre Award, which recognizes exceptional achievement over the past performance year.

Created in 1992 under the distinguished patronage of the late Right Honourable Ramon John Hnatyshyn, then Governor General of Canada, these prestigious awards are presented annually to Canadians whose accomplishments have inspired and enriched the cultural life of our country. “These Awards are Canada’s highest honour for our most accomplished performing artists” said Douglas Knight and Paul-André Fortier, Co-Chairs of the Governor General’s Performing Arts Foundation (GGPAAF).

What is the Wuchien Michael Than Foundation Fund (WMT Foundation Fund)?

The primary purpose of the Wuchien Michael Than Foundation (WMT Foundation) is the development and nurturing of theatre arts in Canada, with particular emphasis on new works by Asian-Canadian playwrights, and the development of emerging talent in the Asian-Canadian theatre community.

The WMT Foundation Fund has been established – in partnership with the Ontario Arts Foundation (OAF) – to provide financial support for a range of activities in keeping with the overall mission of the WMT Foundation.

Call for submissions: Soulo Theatre Festival

Toronto has a new festival that celebrates the best of solo theatre and how to do it yourself. They have put out a call for submissions for their inaugural festival.

SoulOTheatre is a program developed at Toronto’s Ryerson University by Tracey Erin Smith. Her courses guide you through the process of writing, creating and performing a 10-minute solo show. The festival will present a variety of works as well as workshops and panel discussions to help create work that enhances our lives and feeds the soul.

10th Glenn Gould Prize goes to Robert Lepage

Innovative playwright, actor and director of theatre, opera, circus and film, Robert Lepage is the Tenth Glenn Gould Prize Laureate. Mr. Lepage has won international critical acclaim and audience applause for his groundbreaking and influential works that fuse diverse media into cohesive stories that surprise, challenge and delight.

"I would like to congratulate our jury on an inspired selection," said Brian Levine, Executive Director of The Glenn Gould Foundation. "Robert Lepage is an artist whose dreams have expanded the realm of possibility and whose work transcends all boundaries. His work illuminates the human condition in that same sprit of innovation and idealism that motivated Glenn Gould. We feel his selection as Laureate marks a new milestone in the history of The Glenn Gould Prize and The Glenn Gould Foundation."

"It is a good thing to celebrate excellence but I do think it is important to define what "excellence" is. For me, the excellence of an artist should not be measured only by his successes and achievements but also by his courage and capacity to constantly put himself in danger," stated Robert Lepage. "Trial, error and at times even public humiliation are as much part of the process of defining one's uniqueness. It means surviving both the highs of being ahead of the curve and the defeated feeling of trailing behind."
