Calling Canadian writer-directors!

Applications for Canadian writer-directors are now open for TIFF Studio, our year round training programme for mid-career professionals, co-supported by the Harold Greenberg Fund and the Director’s Guild of Canada. Our fourth edition will run from June to January 2017.

Studio is a space for filmmakers to be inspired, consolidate skills, exchange ideas, and discuss challenges in a collaborative environment. Offered to a select group of 10 mid-career, writer-directors, Studio is intended to take the candidates careers to the next level, via creative and business skill development.

The American Film Institute announces winners for the AFI Awards 2015

It’s once again time for AFI AWARDS, an annual celebration of outstanding achievements in the moving image arts that recognizes the year’s most culturally and artistically significant works of both film and television. And what a stellar year its been.

AFI AWARDS aren’t like other accolades about the art form — they acknowledge the importance of the collaborative nature of film and TV production.

Call for submissions: NFB’s Hothouse 11 program

NFB studios across Canada to take part in Hothouse’s 11th season

The National Film Board of Canada (NFB) is seeking submissions for its Hothouse apprenticeship program for emerging Canadian animators, now in its 11^th season.

Canadian filmmakers and artists can apply at http://films.nfb.ca/hothouse by December 11 for the chance to be one of six participants in a 12-week paid apprenticeship program with NFB animation professionals—a one-of-a-kind experience working with the NFB’s Oscar-winning Animation Studio.

Call for submissions: Doc Circuit Montréal Talent Lab

Doc Circuit Montréal (DCM) is delighted to announce that the highly anticipated Talent Lab will take place again this year. This second edition will invite a select group of forty emerging filmmakers to three full days of specialized conferences and exploratory workshops with a roster of artists and experts from the RIDM and Doc Circuit Montreal programmes.

The Talent Lab will take place from November 14-16 2015 - on the final day, Monday November 16th, Talent Lab sessions will combine with DCM industry programs to encourage cross-pollination between emerging and established creators. A tailor-made mentorship program will also be offered to seven selected filmmakers.

The Talent Lab workshops will be held in the round, moderated by producer, consultant and former Hot Docs director of programming Sean Farnel and by the award-winning producer Isabelle Couture (The Amina Profile). The convivial format, the small number of participants, and the continuity provided by the moderators will allow for an intensity and intimacy to develop over the course of the 3 days of discussions and training. Sessions will touch on the intricate aspects of being a documentary filmmaker today: the issues and ethics of using reality as a medium, and insider advice on how to best integrate current industry structures.

Writer/Director John Patrick Shanley on Adaptation and his Creative Process

On the heels of the world premiere announcement of A Woman is a Secret, the new play written by John Patrick Shanley, the Canadian Film Centre (CFC), is pleased to present An Evening with Academy Award-Winning Writer/Director John Patrick Shanley on Adaptation and his Creative Process.

Taking place on Monday, March 23, 2015 at TIFF Bell Lightbox in Toronto, Shanley will take the stage to discuss writing for the screen versus writing for the stage, the challenges associated with adapting work for the screen as both a writer and a director, as well as his experience with casting, working with other directors and producers, and future adaptations of his plays.

Mediafilm’s 8th CinéBazar will be held on Saturday, March 28

For the past 7 years, Mediafilm’s CinéBazar was held in the dead of winter. For its 8th edition, the movie buffs’ fair moves up to late March, in order to welcome the sunshine and a long awaited spring. The CinéBazar will take place on Saturday, March 28, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Centre du Plateau, located on the corner of East St-Joseph Blvd and Fullum St.

Call for submissions: Shaw Media Diverse Voices Program for emerging documentary filmmakers

Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival and Shaw Media are pleased to announce the Shaw Media Diverse Voices Program, which will provide six to eight emerging Canadian filmmakers of diverse backgrounds with training in documentary and factual television production. Taking place during the 2015 Hot Docs Festival, the program will guide participants through an intensive training module and seminar series, career management workshops, and networking events with industry professionals. The Shaw Media Diverse Voices Program will focus on documentary and factual television production and show running, including proposal preparation, the production cycle, financing, co-production, and access to broadcasters.

“Representation of diverse voices in the documentary and television production industries is a vitally important issue for Hot Docs and our community,” said Elizabeth Radshaw, Hot Docs Industry Programs Director. “With Shaw Media’s generous support, this program will help develop core skills of producing and filmmaking.”

DOC Institute announces inaugural award winners

The DOC Institute, an initiative of DOC Toronto, is pleased to announce the winners of its inaugural awards.

The DOC Star Award will be given to Elizabeth Klinck, and the New Visions Award, presented by Urban Post Production, to Brett Story.

“We couldn’t be more pleased with the nominations submitted by DOC members nationwide, and with the selection of winners for our first year,” said Adam Shamoon, Director of the DOC Institute. “The jury had a difficult task, but the winners embody the spirit of the DOC Institute and its awards.”

2014 BAFTA and BFI Screenwriters’ Lecture Series

Every year, BAFTA and BFI host a Screenwriters’ Lecture Series in London, England. This year's speakers were James Schamus (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, The Ice Storm) Emma Thompson (Sense And Sensibility, Nanny McPhee) and Steven Knight (Dirty Pretty Things, Eastern Promises).

They have made available the audio for each of the lectures, as well as provided transcriptions. These are linked below for all three talks.

James Schmaus is behind some of the most loved and critically acclaimed films of the last 25 years. His collaboration with director Ang Lee has resulted in 11 films; as a screenwriter, these include the Oscar and BAFTA-nominated Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000), The Ice Storm (1997) and Lust, Caution (2007). As a producer Schamus’ credits include BAFTA Best Picture winner Brokeback Mountain (2005) and, during his extraordinary career as CEO of Focus Pictures, he helped steward Lost In Translation (2003), The Constant Gardener (2005), The Pianist (2002) and, most recently, Dallas Buyers Club (2013) to the big screen. Schamus is also Professor of Professional Practice in Columbia University’s School of the Arts. Chaired by Tanya Seghatchian.

Rage and Ecstasy is the title and theme of this year’s Kitchen Playwriting Unit for emerging Asian Canadian playwrights who are interested in honing their playwriting skills. This year the unit will be directed by Dramaturg Andrew Cheng, and will be working towards each participant creating their own original piece.

Contemporary World Speakers sessions nurture inspired dialogues between audiences, filmmakers and expert scholars from the University of Toronto's Munk School for Global Affairs

The Toronto International Film Festival®’s Contemporary World Cinema programme presents the latest works of some of the most provocative and important voices in cinema from around the globe. This year’s lineup includes Pascale Ferran, Jessica Hausner, Rolf de Heer, Ronit Elkabetz and Shlomi Elkabetz, Céline Sciamma, Sepideh Farsi, Rakhshan Banietemad, Christian Zübert, Cristián Jiménez, Ryuichi Hiroki and Panos H. Koutras. Unifying diverse perspectives, Contemporary World Cinema brings exciting works from 42 countries.

For the third year, The Toronto International Film Festival partners with the University of Toronto’s Munk School of Global Affairs on the Contemporary World Speakers series. This initiative pairs five films in the Contemporary World Cinema programme with expert scholars from the Munk School. Audiences will have the opportunity to interact with filmmakers and scholars in extended discussions, following each film’s second public screening.
