Call for submissions: Reel Asian's So You Think You Can Pitch?

The Toronto Reel Asian Film Festival has announced a call for submissions for its 2015 edition of So You Think You Can Pitch?, a pitch competition for filmmakers. Winners receive up to $18,000 in production services and cash towards making the project based on their winning pitch.

They accept pitches for any film idea, be it dramatic, documentary, musical or experimental, up to 24 minutes in length, as long as you feature an Asian member in a key creative role, either in front or behind the camera. Applications will be accepted until September 28 at 5pm.

Selected finalists teams will participate in an intensive boot camp at the Reel Asian Pitch Clinic, where finalists gain in-depth professional advice on pitching like a pro in front of a live audience. Finalists will compete at a live Pitch Competition Finale during the 2015 Reel Asian Festival this November 5-15th. Finalists will also be awarded with a 2015 Festival Pass, with access to festival screenings and Industry Series sessions, where you can gain insightful knowledge from industry professionals and access the many networking opportunities throughout the festival.

Call for submissions: Academy Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has put out a call for submissions for its Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting.

Screenwriters who have not earned more than $25,000 writing fictional work for film or television are eligible to submit an original work of one writer, or of two writers who collaborated equally. The work must be in English and not be an adaptation or translation.

Up to five $35,000 fellowships are awarded each year to promising new screenwriters. From the program’s inception in 1986 through 2013, $3.6 million has been awarded to 144 writers.

Call for submissions: RBC Tarragon Emerging Playwrights’ Competition 2013

Tarragon Theatre and the RBC Foundation are pleased to announce the fifth annual RBC Tarragon Emerging Playwrights’ Competition, one of Canada’s most prestigious contests for new artists. Since 2008, this national competition has received applications from every corner of the country. Tarragon and the RBC Foundation believe in investing in Canadian playwrights: through meaningful support we help them gain national recognition for their writing and look for the next Canadian voice to add to the national canon.

Tarragon will consider full-length plays (min. 80 minutes) written in English by Canadian citizens or permanent residents. To qualify, a playwright must be emerging, which is defined as someone with less than five years of professional playwriting experience. See contest guidelines for details:

Call for submissions: CBC Short Film Face Off

CBC Television is pleased to announce another season of Short Film Face Off, Canada’s only television magazine program that features short films from across the country.

Now in its third season on national television, the critically acclaimed show has helped attract a mainstream audience for short films in Canada and increased the profile of its featured filmmakers. To be eligible for consideration, films must be under 12 minutes in length, must have been completed in the past two years, and must not have been broadcast previously on network television. We are looking for comedies and dramas. Music videos and documentaries are not eligible.

The International Documentary Challenge returns for another year of lightning fast filmmaking February 28 - March 4, 2013. Doc Challenge lets you hit the ground running with your crew of filmmakers in order to shoot and edit a documentary film in just five adrenaline-filled days.

Call for submisisons: Crankyfest

Crankytown, an interactive site about periods that features videos, stories and poems from artists such as Feist, Emma Thompson, Jessica Paré and Karine Vanasse, has expanded to include Crankyfest – an online contest for videos about periods. The project was created by Canadian actors Liane Balaban and Vanessa Matsui, and costume designer Jenna Wright, who have partnered with iThentic, Playback’s Digital Company of the Year. The contest launches on January 17th with a submission deadline of March 1, 2013.

The Toronto Youth Shorts Film Festival is back in full swing for our 5th year and we're bringing back the T24 Project, a unique 24 hour film challenge unlike any other. Mark off Friday, February 15, 2013 on your calendars to take part in another exciting installment of this event.

On the night of the challenge, teams of local young filmmakers aged 18-28 will run amok the city to capture their stories about the Toronto experience on camera with the final result shown on the big screen in March.

The 69 Hour Film Challenge is a film making competition where film makers have 69 hours to create a funny short film about sex. Participants are given a secret list of ten items. Toronto, October 16, 2012 - The Canadian Film Centre (CFC) proudly announces the fourth round of The REEL Challenge Contest: Celebrating the Movie and Television Industry at Work.

The REEL Challenge Contest is an opportunity for aspiring filmmakers to speak out on the importance of promoting and protecting a vibrant production industry in Canada, and those who work within it. This year's contest, however, comes with a new twist. It offers participants the opportunity to showcase their work through comedic shorts or animation. The new categories will encourage filmmakers to be creative with their entries.

THE CUBAN HAT PITCH COMPETITION RETURNS TO DOC CIRCUIT MONTREAL

Montreal, September 11, 2012 — As a proud supporter of documentary production, Doc Circuit Montreal is working with the Cuban Hat Project for a second year. The Cuban Hat Pitch will be part of Doc Circuit’s activities from November 12 to 14, 2012.

Call for candidates
This pitch competition is open to all Canadian citizens. It gives creative the opportunity to win prizes in the form of services and participatory funding for producing their documentary project. The initiative will also allow them to build an interest-based community around their project. We are seeking bold treatments with singular visions that question our perceptions of reality and reach new audiences. Documentaries of every length (short, medium, feature) are eligible, as are experimental films, series, and interactive and transmedia projects. Linear films should still have a transmedia strategy in place including at least a secondary distribution platform in mind. The initiative’s objective is to provide collective support to promising documentary projects while bringing creative closer to the documentary industry and their potential audiences.

Call for entries: 2012 24-Hour Playwriting Contest

Stock up on coffee and dust off your lucky mug. Pat the Dog Playwright Centre is thrilled to announce we are hosting our fourth annual 24-hour playwriting contest. This means 30 adrenaline-pumped writers from across Ontario will be hitting the keyboards from 4:00 PM on Friday, October 5, 2012 to 4:00 PM Saturday, October 6, 2012.

All contestants write off-site, so you can write at home, in a coffee shop, on a bus… the location is up to you. There’s no entry fee and no restriction on final script length. All you have to do is write an original play using three secret words — in 24 hours. How easy it that?

Not very. But the rewards could be great. Our winning playwrights are everywhere!

Announcing the RIDM 15^th Anniversary T-shirt Design Contest

As part of its 15^th anniversary celebration, the Montreal International Documentary Festival (RIDM) is holding a t-shirt design contest in collaboration with Chic Moustache.

The competition is open to all amateur and professional creatives, including graphic designers, illustrators and photographers. Participants are invited to submit original ideas inspired by RIDM’s slogan: “Where all stories meet / Là où toutes les histoires se rencontrent.” The theme reflects the great diversity of the films programmed by the festival for the last 15 years.

The call for submissions has been announced for the 7th Annual Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival's pitch competition, So You Think You Can Pitch?

Selected pitch contestants will be given an opportunity to sell their short film idea to a panel of judges from the film industry during the Reel Asian Festival. They will also be awarded with a Festival Pass, with access to festival screenings and Industry Series sessions. There are categories for Emerging and Established filmmakers. One winner in each category will receive a prize package worth thousands to help make their short film.

They will accept submissions for films up to 30 minutes in length, in any form, whether dramatic, documentary, musical or experimental. An Asian must, however, play a key creative role, either in front or behind the camera.

2012 TIFF Emerging Filmmakers Competition - finalists announced

The Toronto International Film Festival has announced the finalists of their second RBC Emerging Filmmakers Competition. The 20 participating filmmakers of the 2011 TIFF Talent Lab were asked to make a short film on a given theme with selected films becoming eligible to win prizes. This year's theme was "time."

Talent Lab participants were asked to develop a 1-5 minute short film and given three months to make their film. Each filmmaker received a $500 bursary donated by RBC and a small video camera. Finalists were selected by a jury panel comprised of established film industry producers, directors and executives. The top five films will now be judged before the 2012 Festival by online voters as well as an official jury of industry professionals.

Ingrid Veninger's $1000 Feature Film Challenge [UPDATED]

The iconoclastic indie filmmaker Ingrid Veninger has announced a $1000 Feature Film Challenge for fellow low-budget guerrilla movie types. She is now accepting submissions from filmmakers/teams who wish to participate.

She is offering up the proceeds from the screenings of her latest feature i am a good person/i am a bad person at the Royal Cinema, where it plays in mid-June. Submissions are due on the last screening day, June 21, after which all applicants may attend a free weekend masterclass in Micro-Budget filmmaking. Then on Monday, June 25th, she will announce which projects will go forward.

The films can begin shooting through July, after which post-production begins in August. Finished films will screen at the Royal Cinema in late September.

Call for submissions: Worldwide Shorts 2012 Screenplay Giveaway

The Canadian Film Centre's Worldwide Short Film Festival has put out a call for submissions for their 2012 Screenplay Giveaway. It's a short film screenwriting contest with a prize package of goods and services worth over $50,000.

The entry fee is $20 which you can put towards the cost of an industry panel ticket. You may submit a screenplay of no more than 40 pages that will be read by an industry jury. The deadline for submissions is 6pm on Wednesday, May 23, 2012.

This contest is open to all Canadian residents. The winner will be announced during the Awards ceremony on the last day of the festival.

The Worldwide Short Film Festival is the largest short film festival in North America. It takes place this year from June 5-10. It also runs an filmmakers symposium which provides filmmakers and those in the industry an excellent opportunity to learn and to network.
