Festival Accès Asie, running from May 1st to 24th, is proud to announce its 20th Anniversary edition! Khosro Berahmandi, General Manager and Artistic Director of the Festival, has prepared an incredible program featuring a wide range of artistic disciplines that will definitely please Asian culture lovers. Festival Accès Asie welcomes actress, Alice Tran (Lance et compte, 30 vies), as its spokesperson for our 20th anniversary celebration.

Included in this edition are 16 artistic events, many of which have been exclusively created for the Festival. To show its appreciation to Accès Asie artist members for their ongoing commitment to the development of the Festival over the years, five artists from the Festival’s Board were invited to create works for this year’s edition. We are very pleased to include these works in our 20th Anniversary program.

The Festival kicks off with our famous Opening Cocktail at which we will reveal the 20th Anniversary Edition program. The first week will feature Kaleidoscope, an exhibition by Kiran Ambwani and Florence So, presenting 20 artists who have appeared in the Festival over the past 20 years. The Festival also invites the public to take part in an open forum Discussion on Asian Heritage in Quebec featuring an exciting panel of Festival artists.

TIFF® announced today the lineup of special guests and events that will enhance the in-cinema experience and complement the upcoming exhibition celebrating the life and work of legendary film auteur Stanley Kubrick. Stanley Kubrick will make its Canadian premiere at TIFF Bell Lightbox on October 31, 2014 until January 25, 2015. More than a decade has passed since Kubrick was honoured with a retrospective in Toronto, and the exhibition will be accompanied by the comprehensive look at his oeuvre, Stanley Kubrick: A Cinematic Odyssey. Throughout the run of the retrospective several esteemed guests, scholars and Kubrick collaborators will introduce a number of screenings and explore the themes and continued influence of Kubrick’s work.

Toronto – Piers Handling, Director and CEO of TIFF and Noah Cowan, Artistic Director of TIFF Bell Lightbox, have announced that the first exhibition dedicated to the life and work of legendary film auteur Stanley Kubrick will be coming to Toronto’s TIFF Bell Lightbox in fall 2014. Stanley Kubrick, developed in collaboration by the Kubrick estate and Frankfurt’s Deutsches Filmmuseum which premiered the exhibition in 2004, has since travelled to some of the world’s most important cultural institutions in Paris, Rome, Brussels, Amsterdam, Melbourne, Los Angeles, and most recently São Paulo. TIFF is proud to be presenting the Canadian premiere of Stanley Kubrick.

Toronto – Starting October 3, TIFF Bell Lightbox audiences will be treated to an inspiring celebration of the best Canadian and international cinema, both past and present. This season includes a world premiere exhibition, major filmmaker retrospectives, free screenings, film-related workshops and new releases highlighting the best of contemporary world cinema.

TIFF proudly presents The Cronenberg Project, a multifaceted celebration of all things Cronenberg, including the world premiere of David Cronenberg: Evolution the most ambitious large-scale exhibition curated by TIFF. Visitors will experience an up-close and personal look at costumes, props, photographs, audio-visual elements, art work and set-design drawings from Cronenberg’s extensive filmography, including the typewriters from Naked Lunch, the instruments from Dead Ringers and the fly pod from The Fly. This exhibition will be accompanied by two film programmes, From Within: The Films of David Cronenberg, a full retrospective of Cronenberg’s films and Psychoplasmic Panic: Cronenberg and the Rise of Body Horror, a 10-film sidebar programme showcasing works by filmmakers influenced by Cronenberg’s vision.

TORONTO — Future Projections celebrates the meeting point of cinema and the visual arts with a 2013 programme featuring installations from significant international and Canadian artists. This year, the popular and provocative city-wide programme is largely devoted to a single exhibition: David Cronenberg: Transformation — the visual art component of TIFF’s multi-faceted 2013 endeavour, The Cronenberg Project.Housed at the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art (MOCCA), the exhibition, curated by Noah Cowan and David Liss, sees six significant artists responding to a specific theme in filmmaker David Cronenberg’s work: the yearning to witness the next stage of human evolution. Artists include: Candice Breitz, James Coupe, Marcel Dzama, Jeremy Shaw, Jamie Shovlin and Laurel Woodcock. The exhibition runs from September 5 to December 29, 2013.

Future Projections will also feature Camille Henrot’s celebrated Grosse Fatigue, winner of the Venice Biennale Silver Lion, an exhibition of drawings by gonzo illustrator Ralph Steadman and a new installation by Radical Friend at the Drake Hotel. These works will be on display for the duration of the Festival, September 5 to 15, 2013.

Launch event for Burgundy Jazz, June 19

Tomorrow night, there will be a launch event for the interactive documentary Burgundy Jazz, a project I've been working on for the last two years (and why I haven't posted much in the last while).

Burgundy Jazz is about the rich history of jazz in Montreal from the perspective of the black community in Little Burgundy. It reaches back to Prohibition and earlier, and explores how Montreal became a jazz hotspot in the early years – how headquarters set up in Montreal by Grand Trunk Railway and Canadian Pacific Railway attracted black workers at a time when train travel was luxurious and being a porter was the best job available to blacks; and how the rejection of Prohibition in Quebec led to Montreal being the only major city in Canada or the U.S. to legally drink, which attracted tourists for drinking, dancing, gambling, prostitution – and jazz.

TIFF’s original film exhibition David Cronenberg: Evolution spearheads an ambitious, multi-platform celebration of the work of the iconic Canadian filmmaker

Toronto – Details of The Cronenberg Project, a multi-platform celebration of the work of one of the world’s greatest filmmakers, David Cronenberg, were announced today by Piers Handling, CEO and Director, TIFF and Noah Cowan, Artistic Director, TIFF Bell Lightbox. Running from November 1, 2013 to January 19, 2014, the core component of The Cronenberg Project is a comprehensive film exhibition titled David Cronenberg: Evolution, curated by Handling and Cowan. The exhibition, which will be presented at TIFF Bell Lightbox in the HSBC Gallery, explores the world of David Cronenberg by tracing his development and progression as a filmmaker through the themes of physical and psychological transformation that define his cinema; from telepaths and scientists to television producers and twin doctors. This also marks the first major original exhibition curated and launched by TIFF that will tour internationally with locations to be announced at a later date.

Noah Cowan, Artistic Director, TIFF Bell Lightbox, announced today details for a comprehensive exploration of Chinese film, art and culture. A Century of Chinese Cinema features a major film retrospective of over 80 titles, sessions with some of the biggest names in Chinese cinema, and a free exhibition featuring two internationally acclaimed visual artists. The flagship programme of the summer season, A Century of Chinese Cinema runs from June 5 to August 11, 2013.

"A Century of Chinese Cinema exemplifies TIFF's vision to foster new relationships and build bridges of cultural exchange," said Piers Handling, Director and CEO of TIFF. "If we are, indeed, living in the Chinese Century, it is essential that we attempt to understand what that entails. There is no better way to do so than through film, which encourages cross-cultural understanding in our city and beyond."

Ciné-bazar 2013, Feb 2

MEDIAFILM.ca’s Ciné-bazar is leaving the church basement where it was getting too tight and is moving this year to a larger and more convivial space in the community room of Centre du Plateau, located at 2275 St. Joseph Blvd East, corner Fullum, still within the Plateau Mont-Royal.

Film buffs and outright film fanatics are expected in big numbers for this unique rendez-vous on Saturday, February 2, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. For this occasion, parking at Lucie-Bruneau Centre (2275 Laurier East) will be available to visitors at a cost of $3 with proceeds benefitting Jeunesse 2000.

Now playing in Le Sud­-Ouest…, Nov 11-Dec 20

Tonight is the opening Vernissage for the exhibition «À l’affiche dans Le Sud-­Ouest…» La belle époque des cinémas de quartier dans Le Sud­-Ouest entre 1898 et 1982 (Now playing in Le Sud-­Ouest…: The Golden Age of the neighbourhood movie theatres in Le Sud-­Ouest, between 1898 and 1982).

The opening takes place from 5-7pm, November 8 at the Centre culturel Georges-Vanier, 2450,rue Workman (Métro Lionel‐Groulx). The bilingual, free exhibition will then run from November 11 to December 20.

The exhibition’s theme is the Golden Age of the neighbourhood movie theatres in Montréal’s arrondissement du Sud-Ouest between 1898 and 1982. It is the result of research done on the evolution and exploitation of the cinema in Pointe-Saint Charles, Griffintown, Ville-Émard, Côte-Saint-Paul, Saint-Henri, Petite-Bourgogne and Sainte-Cunégonde.

Designing 007: Fifty Years of Bond Style, Oct 26–Jan 20

Today is the official opening day for the North American premiere of the Designing 007: Fifty Years of Bond Style exhibition at TIFF Bell Lightbox, which runs from October 26, 2012 to January 20, 2013. In addition, three TIFF Cinematheque film programmes will run parallel to the exhibition.

Titled after Bond's famous preference for martini preparation, Shaken, Not Stirred: Bond on Film will offer audiences an exciting on-screen journey through five decades of James Bond action and adventure inviting them to watch the evolution of 007 from the first James Bond film Dr. No (1962) to Quantum of Solace (2008). Curated by Jesse Wente, Head of Film Programmes, TIFF Bell Lightbox, Bond vs. Blofeld (October 26 - October 27) will feature the six films from the series in which Bond battles his arch-nemesis, criminal mastermind Ernst Stavro Blofeld in a back-to-back marathon screening from Friday, October 26 at 7p.m. until Saturday, October 27 at 1p.m. Curated by Colin Geddes, International Programmer for the Toronto International Film Festival, Beyond Bond: The Other Secret Agents will launch on November 9. This sidebar programme will focus on the wave of spy films from Europe, Asia and the US that sprang up in response to the enormous international popularity of the Bond series.

Toronto's Nuit Blanche 2012, Sept 29

Toronto hosts its seventh annual Nuit Blanche tonight in and around the city's downtown core. From 7pm to sunrise, there will be over 150 free art events and exhibitions for the public to enjoy.

The centrepiece of the night will be a special exhibition of 14 projects in and below Toronto City Hall and Nathan Phillips Square. The selection is entitled Museum for the End of the World and was curated by Janine Marchessault and Michael Prokopow.

Other highlights include Christian Marclay's The Clock at the Power Plant; Kelly Mark’s film Scenes from a Film I’ll Never Make, With Alternate Scores at the Eaton Centre; and several events at TIFF Bell Lightbox including the interactive Movie Studio Playhouse, a looped visual installation compilation of 101 zombie death scenes Cent une tueries de zombies, and STRANGE LOVE/STRANGE LIVES: Silent Films with Live Piano Accompaniment.

2012 Culture Days, Sept 28-30

The third annual Culture Days weekend takes place September 28 to 30 across Canada. It will feature "thousands of free, hands-on, interactive activities that invite the public to participate 'behind-the-scenes,' to discover the world of artists, creators, historians, architects, curators, designers and other creative people in their communities." In Québec, it's the 16th year for their annual Journées de la culture, which in turn inspired the nation-wide movement.

Film-related events in Montreal include the opening screening of the 2012 YoungCuts Film Festival; the Festival International du Film sur l'Art screening two award-winning films Aux limites de la danse and Frédérick Back: Grandeur nature at Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal; Les Rendez-vous du cinéma québécois showcases Québécois short films; and Rencontres internationales du documentaire de Montréal (RIDM) hosts an interactive screen-printing booth.

X-Men Master: Gordon Smith exhibition announced

Free exhibition celebrates Canadian special effects master Gordon Smith with a behind the scenes look at his groundbreaking work on X-Men and X2.

Toronto – While over 80,000 comic and sci-fi fans prepare to gather in Toronto this summer for Fan Expo Canada, TIFF today announced the latest free exhibition opening this month at TIFF Bell Lightbox. Launching on August 17, 2012 and running through March 2013, X-Men Master: Gordon Smith explores and celebrates Ontario native Gordon Smith’s 30-year career in special effects and makeup design, focusing on his exceptional work for the major box office hits X-Men and its sequel X2. Curated by Sylvia Frank, Director of the Film Reference Library and Special Collections at TIFF Bell Lightbox, X-Men Master: Gordon Smith showcases some of Smith’s most important contributions to the industry — including his innovative use of silicone prosthetics which gave audiences spectacular film interpretations of the original Marvel comic characters such as the blade-knuckled Wolverine, the feral strongman Sabretooth, the long-tailed Nightcrawler, and most memorably, the blue-skinned, distinctly underdressed shapeshifter Mystique.

David Cronenberg exhibit announced for TIFF Lightbox

TIFF CELEBRATES DAVID CRONENBERG WITH NEW EXHIBITION
TIFF’s first ever major original touring exhibition launches in Fall 2013

Toronto — Days away from the hotly anticipated world premiere of David Cronenberg’s Cosmopolis at the 65th Cannes Film Festival, Piers Handling, Director and CEO, TIFF and Noah Cowan, Artistic Director, TIFF Bell Lightbox, announced today that TIFF will mount a major exhibition related to the Canadian director, screenwriter and actor. The Cronenberg exhibition, set to launch in Fall 2013 at TIFF Bell Lightbox in Toronto, is co-curated by Handling and Cowan and will be accompanied by several additional elements, including a newly commissioned augmented reality game and a dedicated film programme. This marks the first time TIFF has curated an original exhibition of this magnitude, which will be packaged to tour beginning Summer 2014.

“David Cronenberg is one of the world’s greatest living filmmakers. He also represents Canadian cinema at its very best. This exhibition underscores our commitment to Canadian film and its legacy, through our 20-year history of working with David to preserve his papers and objects in a special archive, and our efforts to restore and make available his film catalogue,” said Handling. Added Cowan: “This is a major milestone for our organization and we can’t wait to present our exhibition to film lovers at TIFF Bell Lightbox next fall and to make it available to leading cultural institutions worldwide.”

Game of Thrones: The Exhibition is a free, timed ticketed event. Fans are invited to reserve a free ticket to the exhibition starting Monday, February 27 at 10 am ET, either in-person at TIFF Bell Lightbox or by calling the TIFF Box Office at 416-599-TIFF/1-888-599-8433. Hours of operation for the exhibition are 12pm to 8pm daily, except on March 12: 12pm to 10pm; and March 13: 10am to 8pm. The exhibition is recommended for ages 14+. Tickets are limited at 4 per person.

Les Globes de Cristal (French Arts & Culture Awards) - winners

The 7th edition of Les Globes de Cristal (Crystal Globes) took place in Paris for French Arts and Culture in twelve categories. Actress Carole Bouquet hosted the ceremony

Intouchables by Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano was named Best Film while Omar Sy was named Best Actor. The film was up against Polisse by Maïwenn, The Artist by Michel Hazanavicius, La Guerre est déclarée (Declaration of War) by Valérie Donzelli and L'Exercice de l‘Etat (The Minister) by Pierre Schoeller. Omar Sy had been competing with his co-star François Cluzet as well as Jean Dujardin (The Artist), Olivier Gourmet L'Exercice de l‘Etat (The Minister), and Jean Pierre Daroussin (Les Neiges du Kilimandjaro (The Snows of Kilimanjaro)).

The Best Actress award went to Karin Viard and Marina Foïs jointly for their work in Maïwenn's Polisse. Their fellow nominees had been Bérénice Béjo (The Artist), Marie Gillain (Toutes nos envies (All Our Desires)), Valérie Donzelli (La Guerre est déclarée (Declaration of War)) and Leïla Bekhti (La Source des femmes (The Source)).

Grace Kelly exhibit at TIFF Lightbox

Four months after announcing the new exhibit, Grace Kelly: From Movie Star to Princess opens officially today at Toronto's Tiff Bell Lightbox. The first floor gallery space at Lightbox will be dedicated to rare items from the life of actress Grace Kelly who then became Princess of Monaco. This is the only North American venue to host this show.

The exhibition is based on the Grimaldi Forum’s “The Grace Kelly Years” exhibition in Monaco and the Victoria and Albert Museum’s “Grace Kelly: Style Icon” exhibition in London. Video footage includes moments with the Royal Family on their visit to Montreal for Expo '67.

Lightbox hosted an invitation-only opening on Wednesday night that was attended by Their Serene Highnesses Prince Albert II and Princess Charlène of Monaco.

As with earlier exhibitions, Lightbox will be screening related films. Icy Fire: The Hitchcock Blonde runs from November 4 to December 11. The Grace on Screen film series starts December 15 and continues to December 29.
