Toronto Korean Film Festival, June 22-July 1

The Inaugural Toronto Korean Film Festival gets underway tonight with a screening at Innis Town Hall of 밀양 (Secret Sunshine) by 이창동 (Lee Chang-dong). "Secret Sunshine" is the literal translation of Miryang, the town in the movie where a single mother moves after the loss of her husband. Actress 전도연 (Jeon Do-yeon) won the Prix d'interprétation féminine (Best Actress Award) at Canned in 2007 for her performance in the lead role.

This will be followed by an opening night party at Lee's Palace, 529 Bloor Street West.

The festival continues over the next nine days with some of the most exciting films in world cinema. Films screened include short films, 봄 여름 가을 겨울 그리고 봄 (Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter.... and Spring) by 김기덕 (Kim Ki-duk), 마더 (Mother) by 봉준호 (Bong Joon-ho), and two of the vengeance trilogy by 박찬욱 (Park Chan-wook), 친절한 금자씨 (Sympathy for Lady Vengeance) and 올드보이 (Oldboy) (currently being remade in Hollywood by Spike Lee).

All films play at Innis Town Hall, 2 Sussex Avenue, on St. George Street between Bloor and Harbord.
