2011 Ghana Movie Awards 2011 - nominations [UPDATED]

The Ghana Movie Awards held a nomination party at the Golden Tulip Hotel in Kumasi this weekend to announce the nominees for their second edition of their awards.

Leading the way with a whopping 21 nominations was Leila Djansi and Kevin Huie's Ties That Bind [see update below]. Its nominated categories included Best Picture, Directing [English Language], Actress (Kimberly Elise and Omotola Jalade) and Best Writing. There was a minor controversy since Kimberly Elise (For Colored Girls) is American while Omotola Jalade is a Nollywood actress, however, this is the first year they've opened the nominations to non-Ghanians.

The Adams Apple series of films by Shirley Frimpong-Manso picked up 20 nominations including Best Picture and Director. Another Frimpong-Manso film 6 Hours To Christmas picked up three more nominations for her.

Other nominees for Best Picture were Bed Of RosesSingle SixSomewhere In AfricaWho Owns The CityKofi AgenkwaEmmanuelMasquerades and Agyaa Koo Gbengbentus.

Last year's inaugural Ghana Movie Awards were led by A Sting In A Tale and Sinking Sands.

[UPDATE: November 29, 2011] The producers of Ties That Bind have issued a statement clarifying that Leila Djansi is the sole director of the film: “Mr. Kevin Huie was a valuable part of the production as a 1st Assistant Director; a position that deals with administration processes and not the creative. Leila Djansi is the sole director of Ties That Binds and, we request that edits be made to reflect such. The Ghana Movie Awards team has been informed and we expect them to do their due diligence and correct this oversight. We wish to emphasis Turning Point Pictures support for the Ghana Film industry and the film industry in Africa as a whole and this is why we always include our productions in efforts that encourage progress in the industry.”
