Call for submissions: 2012 New Ideas Festival

The New Ideas Festival 2012
March 14 - 31, 2012
Call For Script Submissions and Proposals

New Ideas Festival (NIF)
invites playwrights to submit completed scripts or proposals for NIF 2012, which will be held from March 14 - 31, 2012. NIF is a juried three-week festival produced by Toronto’s Alumnae Theatre. All scripts are read blind by two to three readers as part of the selection process. Completed scripts chosen for the festival will receive a full production with six performances. Scripts in very early development may be selected for a staged reading.

NIF offers playwrights an opportunity to collaborate with other theatre artists. As NIF is primarily focused on script development, playwrights playwrights do not act in or direct their own scripts. Instead, they are encouraged to participate actively in the whole production process, from choosing a director and cast to attending rehearsals and revising their work as it comes off the page. NIF also offers dramaturgical support to playwrights who request it, free rehearsal and production space, technical support, access to Alumnae Theatre’s costume and props collections, publicity, and sold-out houses.

Scripts submitted must be original works that have not been previously performed outside of a workshop. They may be in any genre or style, with a running time of 10 to 45 minutes. One act of a full-length play will also be considered. Playwrights submitting a proposal must provide a detailed plan of the project, including a completion schedule and at least three scenes. Preference will be given to scripts with challenging roles for women of all ages.

Submissions will be accepted now until September 15, 2011 (September 30 for Alumnae members). Playwrights may submit a maximum of two projects. A fee of $10 will be charged per submission (fee waived for Alumnae members).
