14th Annual VES Awards Nominees announced

Today, the Visual Effects Society (VES), the industry’s professional global honorary society, announced the nominees for the 14th Annual VES Awards, the prestigious yearly celebration that recognizes outstanding visual effects artistry and innovation in film, animation, television, commercials and video games and the VFX supervisors, VFX producers and hands-on artists who bring this work to life., Nominees were selected by VES members via events hosted by its nine sections, - Australia, Bay Area, London, Los Angeles, Montreal, New York, New Zealand, Toronto and Vancouver. The VES Awards will be held on February 2nd at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

As previously announced, the Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to award-winning director-producer Sir Ridley Scott., The Visionary Award will be presented to acclaimed visual futurist and conceptual artist Syd Mead.

10 contenders remain in Visual Effects Oscar race

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today announced that 10 films remain in the running in the Visual Effects category for the 88th Academy Awards®.

The Academy’s Visual Effects Branch Executive Committee determined the shortlist. All members of the Visual Effects Branch will now be invited to view 10-minute excerpts from each of the shortlisted films on Saturday, January 9, 2016. Following the screenings, the members will vote to nominate five films for final Oscar consideration.

20 Contenders Advance in the Visual Effects Oscar Race

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today announced that 20 films are in the running in the Visual Effects category for the 88th Academy Awards®.

The Academy’s Visual Effects Branch Executive Committee determined the preliminary shortlist. This year, in the Visual Effects category, the number of eligible films initially shortlisted for further consideration was increased to a maximum of 20 titles. The number of films that will be shortlisted for nominations voting remains at 10, which will be announced later this month.

Today, the Visual Effects Society (VES), the industry’s global professional honorary society, held the 13th Annual VES Awards, the prestigious yearly celebration that recognizes outstanding visual effects artistry and innovation in film, animation, television, commercials, video games and special venues. Comedian Patton Oswalt served as host to the more than 1000 guests gathered at the Beverly Hilton to celebrate VFX talent in 23 awards categories. Big Hero 6 was the big winner of the evening garnering five awards. The teams from Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (feature film), Game of Thrones (broadcast) and SSE (commercial) led the wins in their respective categories, taking home three awards each.

Nominees were selected by VES members via events hosted by its nine sections – Australia, Bay Area, London, Los Angeles, Montreal, New York, New Zealand, Toronto and Vancouver. The VES Awards will be held on February 4th at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

As previously announced, the Visionary Award will be presented to J.J. Abrams, award-winning director-producer- writer. (Note: Due to a change in his production schedule, Ridley Scott will unfortunately not be presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award at this time; we look forward to honoring him in the future for his enormous contributions to filmed entertainment).

The International 3D & Advanced Imaging Society bestowed 25 honors for “distinguished achievement” at the 3D Creative Arts Awards on Tuesday night, at Warner Bros. Studios in Los Angeles.

“It is clear from these winners that 3D is maturing as an art form”

Gravity (Warner Bros.) swept several categories including: best “Live Action 3D Feature,” best “Stereography – Live Action,” best “3D Scene of the Year,” and best “2D to 3D Conversion.” Two of the Society’s Lumiere™ statuettes were presented to Frozen (Walt Disney Animation Studios) for best “Animated 3D Feature” and best “Stereography – Animation.”

International 3D and Advanced Imaging Society’s annual Creative Arts Awards – nominations

The International 3D and Advanced Imaging Society today announced its top nominated 3D movies for the 2014 Creative Arts Awards Ceremony to be held January 28th at Warner Bros. Studios.

The top live action nominees include Gravity (Warner Bros.), The Great Gatsby (Warner Bros.), The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug (MGM/New Line Cinema), Oz The Great and Powerful (Walt Disney Pictures), and Star Trek: Into Darkness (Paramount Pictures).

In the animation category, the top nominees include The Croods (DreamWorks Animation), Despicable Me 2 (Universal Pictures), Frozen (Walt Disney Animation Studios), Monster's University (Walt Disney Pictures/Pixar), and Turbo (DreamWorks Animation).

The Visual Effects Society announced the winners of The 11th Annual VES Awards at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California. The event recognizes outstanding visual effects in twenty-four categories of film, animation, television, commercials and video games.

2012 Hollywood Post Alliance Awards – winners

In a gala celebration last night, 7th Annual Hollywood Post Alliance Awards were recognized for the outstanding contributions they have made in helping create the features, programs, spots, and entertainment seen around the world.

The Hollywood Post Alliance – the professional organization for the post production community - presented the 7th Annual HPA Awards to a sold out audience of industry insiders and luminaries. Industry professionals were honored in 12 creative categories as well as a number of special awards including Engineering Excellence, HPA Judges Award for Creativity and Innovation in Post Production, and the prestigious Charles S. Swartz Award for Outstanding Contribution in the Field of Post Production, which had been announced earlier.

Ray Dolby, Founder and Director Emeritus of Dolby Laboratories, received the Charles S. Swartz Award for his profound impact on the post production industry and innumerable contributions to image and sound recording technology. Sound Designer, Editor and technology visionary, Walter Murch, A.C.E. was on hand to present to his friend and colleague.

Toronto – While over 80,000 comic and sci-fi fans prepare to gather in Toronto this summer for Fan Expo Canada, TIFF today announced the latest free exhibition opening this month at TIFF Bell Lightbox. Launching on August 17, 2012 and running through March 2013, X-Men Master: Gordon Smith explores and celebrates Ontario native Gordon Smith’s 30-year career in special effects and makeup design, focusing on his exceptional work for the major box office hits X-Men and its sequel X2. Curated by Sylvia Frank, Director of the Film Reference Library and Special Collections at TIFF Bell Lightbox, X-Men Master: Gordon Smith showcases some of Smith’s most important contributions to the industry — including his innovative use of silicone prosthetics which gave audiences spectacular film interpretations of the original Marvel comic characters such as the blade-knuckled Wolverine, the feral strongman Sabretooth, the long-tailed Nightcrawler, and most memorably, the blue-skinned, distinctly underdressed shapeshifter Mystique.

The Visual Effects Society (VES) presented the winners of its 10th Annual VES Awards Tuesday night at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California. The annual event recognizes outstanding visual effects artistry in 23 categories of film, animation, television, commercials, special venues and video games. As with the 39th Annie Awards on the weekend, actor/comedian Patton Oswalt hosted the evening's events.

Also as with the Annies, Rango was the evening’s top winner. It came away with four awards, for Outstanding Visual Effects in an Animated Feature Motion Picture, Outstanding Animated Character in an Animated Feature Motion Picture, Outstanding Created Environment in an Animated Feature Motion Picture, and Outstanding Virtual Cinematography in an Animated Feature Motion Picture.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes took the main prize of Outstanding Visual Effects in a Visual Effects-Driven Feature Motion Picture, and won a total of two awards. So too did Hugo and Transformers: Dark of the Moon. Martin Scorsese put in a surprise appearance at the presentation to receive his honours and was one of the evening’s highlights.

“Tintin” leads with most feature nominations; “Boardwalk Empire” for broadcast

Los Angeles, January 9, 2012 - The Visual Effects Society (VES) today announced the nominees for its 10th Annual VES Awards ceremony recognizing outstanding visual effects artistry in 23 categories of film, animation, television, commercials, special venues and video games. Nominees were chosen Saturday, January 7 by distinguished panels of VES members who viewed submissions at the FotoKem screening facilities in Burbank and New York, FotoKem’s Spy in San Francisco, and other facilities in London, Sydney, Vancouver and Wellington, NZ.

“The standard of the creative work that is being considered this year is unbelievably high across all categories,” said Jeffrey A. Okun, Chair of the Visual Effects Society. “The judges faced a huge challenge because all of the work was so far above the norm. We’re honored to have the opportunity to focus the spotlight on the outstanding work that has contributed to some of the highest grossing films and broadcast projects of all time.”

Academy's Visual Effects shortlist of 10 films

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences narrowed the field today for its Achievement in Visual Effects Oscar from 15 films down to 10.

The movies still eligible to be nominated for a Visual Effects Academy Award include the year's top three box office hits Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, Transformers: Dark of the Moon and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Each of these three pulled in over $1 billion globally, while another shortlisted film Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol appears to be on track to join them in the billion-dollar club.

The list is trimmed slightly from the previous shortlist of 15 and eliminates Cowboys & Aliens, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, Sucker Punch, Super 8 and Thor from the list.
