EURODOC PITCH and ONE‐ON‐ONE FOR EMERGING FILMMAKERS

Montreal, August 1, 2016 – Doc Circuit Montréal (DCM) is delighted to announce two exciting calls for projects: the EURODOC Pitch and the One‐on‐One for Emerging Filmmakers. Established québecois producers and emerging filmmakers are invited to submit their documentary projects by September 15th as part of these two pitching events.

EURODOC Pitch

We are now accepting submissions to the prized EURODOC Pitch! Five Quebec-based documentary producers will be selected for the opportunity to pitch live in the hopes of receiving a $4,000 grant and securing a much coveted slot for one of Europe’s leading training programs.

Nominations announced for the EE British Academy Film Awards in 2016

The nominations for the EE British Academy Film Awards in 2016 have been announced.

Bridge of Spies and Carol each receive nine nominations. The Revenant is nominated in eight categories. Mad Max: Fury Road has seven nominations. Brooklyn and The Martian are each nominated six times. The Big Short, The Danish Girl and Ex Machina receive five nominations. Star Wars: The Force Awakens receives four nominations.

Bridge of Spies is nominated in the following categories: Best Film, Director for Steven Spielberg, Original Screenplay, Original Music, Cinematography, Editing, Production Design and Sound. Mark Rylance is nominated for Supporting Actor.

Carol is nominated for Best Film, Director for Todd Haynes, Adapted Screenplay, Cinematography, Production Design, Costume Design and Make Up & Hair. Cate Blanchett is nominated for Leading Actress and Rooney Mara is nominated for Supporting Actress.

The 28th European Film Awards 2015 – winners

The European Film Academy held their 29th European Film Awards ceremony tonight at the Haus der Berliner Festspiele in Berlin.

The top prizewinner of the evening was Paolo Sorrentino's Youth (La giovinezza). It took the biggest prize for European Film, as well as the awards for European Director and European Actor (Michael Caine). Additionally, it's star Michael Caine was also presented with an Honourary Award. Another Sorrentino film The Great Beauty (La grande bellezza) won those same three categories two years ago, and then went on to win Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars.

The European Actress award went to Charlotte Rampling for her role in Andrew Haigh's 45 Years. She too was presented with an additional honour, the European Film Academy Lifetime Achievement Award.

The European Union Film Festival (EUFF) is very proud to announce the 28 extraordinary features being showcased at the 2015 edition of the Festival, one from each of the EU member countries.

Making their North American debut at the eleventh EUFF are: Robert Thalheim’s PARENTS (Germany), a modern, honest and humorous portrait of the contemporary family; and Simonas Askelavicius and Ricardas Marcinkus’ SAUL AND PAUL ROBBED THEM ALL (Lithuania), a heartwarming comedy on two average Joes whose lives are turned upside down by a wealthy girlfriend-stealing Georgian.

The Jury of the 68th Festival de Cannes

Joel Coen and Ethan Coen, directors, screenwriters and producers, will be the two Presidents of the Jury of the 68th Festival de Cannes.

This year they will be joined by seven key figures in world cinema from Canada, Spain, the United States, France, Mali, Mexico and the United Kingdom.

The Jury will thus be made up of nine distinctive voices – four women and five men – each with the same voting rights.

Their task will be to decide among the films in Competition and select the prize winners, culminating in the Palme d’or, which will be announced on stage during the Festival Closing Ceremony on Sunday 24th May.

The 54th Semaine de la Critique announces lineup

On the poster of the 54th edition of La Semaine de la Critique, the actress Lou de Laâge embraces the open horizon in front of her. This wonderful energy and the amazing life force it carries embody the strong desire leading us to discover the new breath of fresh air in cinema worldwide.

2015 Festival de Cannes announces Official Selection [UPDATED]

The Press Conference for the 68th Festival de Cannes, at which the 2015 Official Selection was announced, was held on Thursday 16th April at 11:00 am in Paris.

On Monday morning, the festival announced their opening film to be La Tête Haute (Standing Tall) by Emmanuelle Bercot. However, they strangely erred in claiming that she was to be the first female director to open the Festival de Cannes in history. Many observers pointed out that Diane Kurys opened the Festival de Cannes in 1987 with Un homme amoureux (A Man in Love). The festival later issued a necessary correction to their initial statement.

The Short Films Selection at the 68th Festival de Cannes

The announcement of the 2015 Official Selection will begin with the short films In Competition and the Cinéfondation Selection, in the run-up to the press conference for the 68th Festival de Cannes, to be held on Thursday 16th April.

Following their deliberations, the Cinéfondation and Short Films Jury, presided by Abderrahmane Sissako, will decide on the best films both from the Short Films Competition and the Cinéfondation.

This year, the selection committee received 4,550 short films – 1,000 more than in 2014 – from over 100 countries.

65th Berlin International Film Festival awards – winners

Tonight was the official closing night awards ceremony for the 65th Berlin International Film Festival.

The night's top prize, the Golden Bear for Best Film, went to Taxi by Jafar Panahi. Because Panahi has been unable to leave Iran after his 2010 conviction on charges of "making propaganda," the award was accepted on his behalf by his young niece Hanna Saeidi. The International Jury consisted of Darren Aronofsky (President), Daniel Brühl, Bong Joon-ho, Martha De Laurentiis, Claudia Llosa, Audrey Tautou and Matthew Weiner.

The Best Director Silver Bear was shared by Radu Jude for Aferim! and Małgorzata Szumowska for Body. Both acting Silver Bears went to Andrew Haigh's 45 Years stars Charlotte Rampling and Tom Courtenay. Patricio Guzmán won the Best Script prize for his film El botón de nácar (The Pearl Button)

2015 EE British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs) – Winners Announced

The winners of the EE British Academy Film Awards have been announced at the ceremony hosted by Stephen Fry at the Royal Opera House, London, on Sunday 8 February 2015

At tonight’s EE British Academy Film Awards Boyhood was named Best Film with Richard Linklater winning Director and Patricia Arquette receiving the award for Supporting Actress. The Awards were hosted for a tenth year by Stephen Fry and held at London’s Royal Opera House.

The Grand Budapest Hotel won five awards: Costume Design, Production Design, Make Up & Hair and Original Music, with Wes Anderson winning his first BAFTA for Original Screenplay.

Toronto International Film Festival chooses London, England for 2015 City to City spotlight

The Toronto International Film Festival® today announced that the 2015 City to City programme will focus on London, England. The City to City selection will be curated by Piers Handling, Director and CEO of TIFF, and Cameron Bailey, Artistic Director of the Toronto International Film Festival.

“From Alfred Hitchcock to Steve McQueen, England has a remarkable tradition of filmmaking and the city of London is one of the premiere film centres in the world,” said Handling. “We’re looking forward to shining the Festival spotlight on this city and to bringing the cinema of London to Toronto audiences.”

“Our annual screening trip to London is always both breathtaking and heartbreaking. We’ve been awed by the talent in this global city and disappointed that we can’t invite all the films we’d like to,” said Bailey. “This year’s spotlight on London filmmaking will be a rare opportunity to revel in the riches London has to offer. It’s also a chance to celebrate the city where I was born.”

Nominations Announced for the EE British Academy Film Awards in 2015

The nominations have been announced for the EE British Academy Film Awards in 2015.

The Grand Budapest Hotel receives 11 nominations. Birdman and The Theory of Everything are each nominated in ten categories. The Imitation Game has nine nominations. Boyhood and Whiplash are each nominated five times. Mr. Turner, Nightcrawler and Interstellar receive four nominations. Pride has three nominations.

The Grand Budapest Hotel is nominated in the following categories: Best Film, Director and Original Screenplay for Wes Anderson, Original Music, Cinematography, Editing, Production Design, Costume Design, Make Up & Hair and Sound. Ralph Fiennes is nominated for Leading Actor.

27th European Film Awards – winners

The ceremony for the 27th European Film Awards was held this year at the Latvian National Oscar House in Riga.

The Polish film Ida by Paweł Pawlikowski was the big winner on the night. It won the award for Best European Film as well as the awards for Director and Screenwriter. It was the previously announced winner for cinematography. Additionally, it won the People’s Choice Award.

Acting awards went to Marion Cotillard for Two Days, One Night and Timothy Spall for Mr. Turner.

17th Moët British Independent Film Awards – winners

The ceremony for the 17th Moët British Independent Film Awards took place tonight at Old Billingsgate in London. The event was hosted by actor, writer and comedian Simon Bird.

Matthew Warchus' gay themed miners' strike drama Pride took the top prize of Best British Independent Film. It also won both Supporting Acting categories for actors Imelda Staunton and Andrew Scott. Yann Demange's '71 had led the nominations with nine. Its only win was for Best Director.

Honourary Awards were presented to actors Emma Thompson and Benedict Cumberbatch, and to director John Boorman.

20th Anniversary MTV Europe Music Awards (EMA) – winners

One of the biggest global annual music events celebrating the hottest artists from around the world, the 2014 MTV EMA (Europe Music Awards) was punctuated with outrageous, unexpected moments, once-in-a-lifetime collaborations and rousing performances that will undoubtedly go down in history. This year's show transformed Glasgow's SSE Hydro into an unforgettable time-travelling extravaganza, catapulting viewers through memories of the most outlandish moments in the MTV EMA's 20-year history.

The show kicked-off by transporting viewers back to 1994, where a young Nicki Minaj watched the first-ever MTV EMA from her bedroom before traveling into the future, making a grand entrance into the 2014 MTV EMA in a frilled ball gown and sequined bra . "Her Royal Minajesty" truly commandeered the evening, taking home the award for Best Hip Hop, and even giving the audience a show-stopping, jaw-dropping blend of her biggest hits including 'Super Bass', 'Anaconda' and a global debut performance of her new track 'Bed of Lies', which featured a surprise appearance by Skylar Grey. The host also made it rain, telling the Glasgow crowd, "it's my round!" before showering them with enough "Minaj money" for 1,000 free drinks.

Nominations and first winners announced for the EFA (European Film Awards) 2014

At the Seville European Film Festival the European Film Academy and EFA Productions proudly announced the nominations for the 27th European Film Awards. The more than 3,000 EFA Members will now vote for the winners who will be presented during the awards ceremony on 13 December in Riga, European Capital of Culture 2014.

Pawel Pawlikowski’s black-and-white film Ida led the field with five nominations. They were for Best European Film, Director, Screenplay, and Actress nominations for its co-stars Agata Trzebuchowska and Agata Kulesza. Lukasz Zal and Ryszard Lenczewski were named European Cinematographer by a jury selecting winners for the craft/technical categories.

Russian director Andrey Zvyagintsev‘s Leviathan was next with four nominations. It was also nominated for Best European Film, Director and Screenplay, and Aleksei Serebryakov was nominated for European Actor.

2014 Semaine de la Critique awards – winners

The 53rd Semaine de la Critique has announced the winners for their awards. Leading the way with three wins including the Grand Prize is Племя (The Tribe) by Мирослав Слабошпицький (Myroslav Slaboshpytskiy). It is his first film and is told entirely in sign language without dialogue or subtitles. It also won the Visionary Award and the grant from the Gan Foundation for Distibution.

The 53rd Semaine de la Critique concludes tomorrow.

17th Cinéfondation awards – winners

The Cinéfondation and Short Films Jury headed by Abbas Kiarostami and including Mahamat-Saleh Haroun, Noémie Lvovsky, Daniela Thomas and Joachim Trier, has awarded the 2014 Cinéfondation Prizes during a ceremony held in the Buñuel Theatre, followed by the screening of the winning films.

The Cinéfondation Selection consisted of 16 student films, chosen out of 1 631 entries coming from 457 film schools around the world.

The awarded films will receive €15,000 for the First Prize, €11,250 for the Second and €7,500 for the Third.

Quinzaine des Réalisateurs (Directors' Fortnight) at Cannes announces 2014 lineup

The Festival de Cannes' sidebar Quinzaine des Réalisateurs (or Directors' Fortnight) has announces the programming selection for its 46th edition.

The opening night fil will be Bande de fille (Girlhood) by Céline Sciamma. It is her third film after similarly-themed Naissance des Pieuvres (Water Lilies) and Tomboy which also explored adolescence and sexuality.

The closing night film will be Pride by British filmmaker Matthew Warchus. It is a gay-politics comedy starring Bill Nighy, Imelda Staunton, Dominic West and Paddy Considine.

Canada is represented by two Quebec films. Tu Dors Nicole by Stéphane Lafleur is the latest film from micro_scope Productions, makers of acclaimed films such as Philippe Falardeau's Monsieur Lazhar, and Denis Villeneuve's Incendies and Enemy. Montreal-based Marie-Josée Saint-Pierre will present her animated documentary Jutra about the groundbreaking Quebec director in the short film section.
