2012 WGC Screenwriting Awards - nominees

The Writers Guild of Canada has announced this morning the finalists for their 16th annual WGC Screenwriting Awards.

For the Movies and Miniseries category, the nominees are Afghan Luke by Patrick Graham, Douglas Bell, Mike Clattenburg and Barrie Dunn; John A: Birth of a Country by Bruce M. Smith; and Take This Waltz by Sarah Polley.

Interestingly, none of the high-profile Quebec films such as Monsieur Lazhar by Pierre Falardeau were nominated. Other internationally acclaimed screenplays such as In Darkness by WGC member David Shamoon were also omitted. Both films were nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards.

Over 175 scripts were nominated for awards this year. 34 screenwriters now contend with 28 finalist scripts in the seven available categories. A few special awards including the WGC Showrunner Award will also be presented at the ceremony.

The 2012 WGC Screenwriting Awards evening hosted by the Writers Guild of Canada to honour excellence in screenwriting will take place on Monday, April 23 in Toronto.
