CFC and Bell Media Announce New Showrunner Bootcamp

A high level advanced program committed to developing our future showrunners

TORONTO, November 04, 2011 – CFC (Canadian Film Centre) and Bell Media jointly announce the creation of the BELL MEDIA SHOWRUNNER BOOTCAMP, designed to equip 3-4 experienced TV writers per year with the knowledge and management skills necessary to becoming successful showrunners.

“In the ever-changing Canadian TV business, creating and delivering successful series has never been more demanding, and the need for experienced and committed showrunners never greater,” says Corrie Coe, Senior Vice-President, Independent Production, Bell Media. “We are delighted to partner with the CFC on a program that will be so valuable to our industry.”

The BELL MEDIA SHOWRUNNER BOOTCAMP will build on leadership skills, provide practical exposure to the producing side of the equation, and empower participants to confidently take on all of the challenges and responsibilities of showrunning.

Writers Guild of Canada Executive Director Maureen Parker says, “This new CFC program recognizes that the showrunner is the key creative force driving the success of a TV series. Fostering the next generation of Canadian showrunners through training and mentorship will strengthen the entire industry. The WGC congratulates the CFC and Bell Media as they launch this program to help experienced screenwriters hone the skills they need for this critical role.”

The BELL MEDIA SHOWRUNNER BOOTCAMP will delve into the different aspects of showrunning, a role that is at the heart of every series. It will explore positive leadership styles, negotiating techniques, best practices and the different kinds of relationships that can be built with producers in support of the creative and business process. It will cover all the primary aspects of this unusual and demanding, right/left brain job.

“Showrunning is a complex and vital role to getting great shows on the air. We are excited to work closely with experienced tv writers, who possess many of the unique qualities, demeanor and vision to carry a show from development through to delivery,” says Kathryn Emslie, the CFC's Director of Film & TV Programs.

The program will take place in February 2012 over a 10-day window in Toronto, followed by 3-5 days in Los Angeles learning from seasoned showrunning professionals. Over the course of the following 3-6 months, each participant will benefit from an individually tailored program that will round out their knowledge and build on their skill sets, style and career goals – a unique aspect to this particular program.

BELL MEDIA SHOWRUNNER BOOTCAMP is open to nominated applicants from across Canada.  The deadline for nominations is Monday, November 28, 2011. For full application and criteria details, please CLICK HERE
