The inaugural Magritte du Cinéma Awards for francophone Belgian film

Belgium's l'Académie André Delvaux presented a ceremony for the inaugural Magritte du Cinéma Awards to honour films by Belgium's French-speaking community. Ironically, the night's big winner was the English-language film Mr. Nobody, by Jaco Van Dormael. It claimed six awards - Best Film, Director, Original Screenplay, Cinematography, Editing and Music.

The Best Actress Magritte went to Anne Coesens for her role in Illégal. It also won Best Supporting Actress (Christelle Cornil). Illégal was Belgium's submission to the Academy Awards for the Best Foreign Language Film category.

Two other films won two awards each. Elève libre (Free Student) won for Best Actor (Jonathan Zaccaï) and Most Promising Actress (Pauline Etienne). Panique au village (A Town Called Panic) won for Sound and Art Direction.

Ken Loach's film Looking for Eric won Best Co-Production. It was made with the Dardenne brothers' production company Les Films du Fleuve.

Voting for the Magritte du Cinéma was conducted by approximately 650 French-speaking Belgian film professionals, from a short-list of productions from no earlier than 2008.
