9th Annual Visual Effects Society (VES) Awards - winners


The Visual Effects Society announced the winners of the 9th Annual VES Awards on Tuesday night at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills. The sold-out event was hosted by comedian Patton Oswalt, which recognizes outstanding visual effects in film, animation, television, commercials and video games.

Inception was the evening’s dominant prize-winner, with four awards including Outstanding Visual Effects in a Visual Effects Driven Motion Picture. It won all four categories in which it was nominated. In addition, Christopher Nolan was honoured with the inaugural VES Visionary Award, presented to him by Inception actor Tom Hardy.

The animated film How to Train Your Dragon was winner of three awards including Outstanding Animation in an Animated Feature Motion Picture. It also won every category in which it was nominated. Other feature films that took awards were Hereafter and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1.

Legendary stop-motion master Ray Harryhausen was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award. He was celebrated with a number of video tributes and Harryhausen appeared on a live video linkup to accept the award from VES.

The big winner for television was The Pacific, which grabbed three awards, including Outstanding Visual Effects in a Broadcast Miniseries, Movie or a Special.
