Montreal Greek Film Festival, Oct 28-Nov 3


The 3rd Montreal Greek Film Festival (Festival du Film Grec de Montréal) takes place this week starting tonight. The festival opens with a screening of Pantelis Voulgaris' Νύφες (Brides). The film is executive produced by Martin Scorsese and tells the story of one of the 700 mail order brides who left Greece for Chicago on the SS King Alexander in 1922.

The festival will also be screening Ρεμπέτικο (Rembetiko), Ας περιμένουν οι γυναίκες (Let the Women Wait), Απ\' τα κόκκαλα βγαλμένα (Welcome to All Saints), Happy Day, Τι έκανες στον πόλεμο, Θανάση (What Did You Do in the War, Thanasis?), Ψυχή Βαθιά (With Heart and Soul), Wasted Youth, Ημερολόγιο Καταστρώματος – Γιώργος Σεφέρης (Log Books – George Seferis), Σεισμός (Earthquake), and Γλυκό μου καναρίνι (My Sweet Canary).

Γλυκό μου καναρίνι (My Sweet Canary) closes the festival on November 3 at the Rialto Theatre in a program that also includes an Awards ceremony and a live performance by Cirque du Soleil's Nitza Melas.

Other than the closing night gala, all screenings are at Cinéma du Parc. All films are in Greek with English subtitles.

3rd Montreal Greek Film Festival - Highlights

Friday 28th of October, 2011         Opening Night of MGFF 2011    7.00pm

The Montreal Greek Film Festival is back at Cinéma du Parc on Oct 28th. The evening will start with the projection of the Opening Night Film `BRIDES` by Pantelis Voulgaris at 7.00pm followed by Opening Night Cocktail at Presse Café (3501 Av. Du Parc). Food and Wine exclusively by Pilaros. Join us to celebrate together the beginning of the 3rd edition of the Montreal Greek Film festival!

Saturday 29th of October, 2011    

Director Sotiris Goritsas to introduce at 7.00pm his film WELCOME TO `ALL SAINTS`

Sunday 30th of October, 2011                       

Screening of the film `WITH HEART AND SOUL` to be introduced by Assistant Professor of History at McGill University, Tassos Anastasiadis B.Papachristidis Chair for Greek and Modern-Greek Studies.

Monday 31st of October, 2011          Seferis Night                      7.00pm

On Monday 31st of November, MGFF has included in the program a literary night with the support of local Universities, and the Hellenic Student Associations of McGill and Concordia Universities. The film LOG BOOKS-YORGOS SEFERIS by Stelios Charalambopoulos will be screened at 7.00pm.  The film will be introduced by Professor Jacques Bouchard, Director of Neo-Hellenic Studies at the University of Montreal. Tuesday 1st of November, 2011       Cephalonian Night –Wine Tasting

A festive evening is organized under the auspices of the General Consulate of Greece in Montreal and the collaboration of the Cephalonian Brotherhood `AENOS`. On Nov 1st, following the screening of the film EARTHQUAKE, a Wine-Tasting reception will follow. Join us for Wine and home- made cephalonian food, that the Women of the Cephalonian Association will prepare for us!

Thursday 3rd of November, 2011      Closing Night at Rialto   7.00pm

MGFF will celebrate the closing of its 3rd edition with the screening of an exceptional film, a Greek-Israeli co-production MY SWEET CANARY about the life of Roza Eskenazy , tracing the life and career of the ultimate Greek rembetiko singer Roza Eskenazy (1895-1980). The screening will be the film’s North American premiere. The program also includes : Award Ceremony, Live Performance  by Cirque du Soleil, singer and composer, Nitza Melas, Food and Wine ! The closing night is organized in collaboration with the  Center of Israel and Jewish Affairs.
