Toronto International Film Festival Announces 2016 Award Winners

The Toronto International Film Festival® announced its award winners at a ceremony at TIFF Bell Lightbox today, hosted by Piers Handling, CEO and Director of TIFF, and Cameron Bailey, Artistic Director of the Toronto International Film Festival. The short film awards below were selected by a jury comprised of American filmmaker Abteen Bagheri (That B.E.A.T.), French filmmaker Eva Husson (Bang Gang), and Canadian filmmaker Jeff Barnaby (Rhymes for Young Ghouls).

SHORT CUTS AWARD FOR BEST CANADIAN SHORT FILM
The Short Cuts Award for Best Canadian Short Film goes to Alexandre Dostie’s Mutants. The jury remarked, “Mutants takes a summer in Quebec and infuses it with a ribald lyricism. Awkward moments of sexual awakening paired with self cannibalism and self immolation rise it above standard nostalgia. It was a film that took chances with both its subject matter and humour, and framing it through the eyes of children. Congratulations.” The award offers a $10,000 cash prize.

2015 MTV Video Music Awards – nominations

The 2015 MTV Video Music Awards nominations are here — so get voting!

The list for the show, airing Sunday, August 30 at 9 p.m. ET/PT — and hosted by Miley Cyrus — is led by Taylor Swift, who is up for nine Moonmen. Following Taylor, pal Ed Sheeran has six noms and is competing against her for the coveted Video of the Year category. We doubt there will be any bad blood, though.

TIFF Celebrates its 40th Anniversary with Slate of Free Programming

TIFF thanks audiences for 40 years of support with 40 free films including a screening of Vertigo with a live score co-presented with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, crowd-sourced screenings and a free exhibition celebrating film fans

Piers Handling, Director & CEO of TIFF, tonight announced special programming taking place during the 2015 summer and fall seasons in celebration of the organization’s 40th anniversary. The announcements were made at a free community party held in David Pecaut Square in downtown Toronto, prior to this season’s first TIFF in the Park event, a screening of the 1992 Toronto International Film Festival People's Choice Award–winner Strictly Ballroom.

“The free programming we’re offering will revisit and commemorate TIFF’s history, and allow us to thank our audiences for their dedication and support over the last four decades,” said Handling. “This is a milestone year for the organization. Not only are we looking back and celebrating 40 years of bringing the world to Toronto, but we’re looking ahead to the next 40 years, with a focus on taking our programming to cultural centres around the world.”

Hot Docs has wrapped its 22nd edition with record-breaking audience numbers reaching an estimated 200,500. The 11-day event featured 452 public screenings of 210 films on 17 screens across Toronto, an internationally renowned conference and market for documentary professionals, and Docs For Schools, a phenomenally popular education program for youth. The Festival welcomed more than 300 guest filmmakers and subjects from across Canada and around the world to present their films and take part in special post-screening Q&A sessions with audiences. Official film selections were chosen from a total of 2724 films submitted to the Festival.

At the Festival, Hot Docs presented the third edition of the Scotiabank Big Ideas series, featuring screenings and live onstage discussions with prominent documentary subjects, including Grammy-nominated comedian Tig Notaro, charismatic former Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador Danny Williams, journalist Andy Greenberg, the parents of DEEP WEB subject Ross Ulbricht, Ex-Fugee Pras Michel, Olympic Gold Medal–winning hockey player Charline Labonté, former Major League Baseball player Billy Bean, and American college football player Conner Mertens. This year also saw the launch of the DOCX program, which featured a virtual reality installation of four short films and an interactive live performance launching the final chapter of the NFB’s acclaimed HIGHRISE digital documentary series.

Sturla Gunnarsson's Monsoon crowned Canada's Top Ten Film Festival People's Choice Award winner

For the first time in Canada’s Top Ten Film Festival history, audiences were invited to vote for their favourite feature film. Festivalgoers crowned Sturla Gunnarsson’s Monsoon the People’s Choice Award winner.

The award is announced as TIFF wraps up 10 days of celebrating the nation’s cinema. From January 2 to 11, Toronto audiences were presented with screenings of the top 10 features, shorts and student short films of the year, introductions and Q&A sessions with filmmakers, along with free engagements and special events that included onstage conversations with actor Keanu Reeves, author Naomi Klein and filmmaker Avi Lewis. Now in its 14th year, the festival attracted the highest number of attendees to date.

People’s Choice Awards 2015 – winners

The People have spoken!

Robert Downey Jr., The Big Bang Theory, and Grey’s Anatomy were among the big winners at the People’s Choice Awards on Wednesday night in Los Angeles.

Hosted by Mom stars Anna Faris and Allison Janney, the telecast honored the very best in movies, music and TV — as chosen solely by fans.

Movie superheroes reigned supreme at the annual telecast, which kicks off award season. Iron Man’s Robert Downey Jr. picked up two awards, including “Favorite Movie Actor” and “Favorite Dramatic Movie Actor,” while his Avengers co-star Chris Evans walked away with “Favorite Action Movie Star.”

2014 American Music Awards – winners

The 42nd American Music Awards was held tonight at the Nokia Theatre L.A. Live in Los Angeles, California. The event was hosted by Pitbull, and performers included Taylor Swift, Charli XCX, Magic!, 5 Seconds of Summer, Imagine Dragons, Sam Smith, Iggy Azalea, Lorde, Ariana Grande, The Weeknd, Selena Gomez, One Direction, Nicki Minaj, Fergie, Garth Brooks, Mary J. Blige and Jennifer Lopez.

The top winner was One Direction. They took three awards – Artist of the Year, Favorite Band, Duo Or Group – Pop/Rock, and Favorite Album – Pop/Rock. Katy Perry also claimed three wins. She won Single of the Year, Favorite Female Artist – Pop/Rock, and Favorite Artist — Adult Contemporary.

Iggy Azalea and Beyoncé both won two apiece. Iggy Azalea's wins were for Favorite Artist and Favourite Album in the Rap/Hip-Hop category. Beyoncé was winner for Favorite Female Artist and Favourite Album in the Soul/R&B Female section.

20th Anniversary MTV Europe Music Awards (EMA) – winners

One of the biggest global annual music events celebrating the hottest artists from around the world, the 2014 MTV EMA (Europe Music Awards) was punctuated with outrageous, unexpected moments, once-in-a-lifetime collaborations and rousing performances that will undoubtedly go down in history. This year's show transformed Glasgow's SSE Hydro into an unforgettable time-travelling extravaganza, catapulting viewers through memories of the most outlandish moments in the MTV EMA's 20-year history.

The show kicked-off by transporting viewers back to 1994, where a young Nicki Minaj watched the first-ever MTV EMA from her bedroom before traveling into the future, making a grand entrance into the 2014 MTV EMA in a frilled ball gown and sequined bra . "Her Royal Minajesty" truly commandeered the evening, taking home the award for Best Hip Hop, and even giving the audience a show-stopping, jaw-dropping blend of her biggest hits including 'Super Bass', 'Anaconda' and a global debut performance of her new track 'Bed of Lies', which featured a surprise appearance by Skylar Grey. The host also made it rain, telling the Glasgow crowd, "it's my round!" before showering them with enough "Minaj money" for 1,000 free drinks.

2014 American Music Awards announces complete nominations

The American Music Awards, the world’s biggest fan-voted award show, today announced the 2014 American Music Awards nominees. In advance of today’s announcement, recording artists Jason Derulo and Charli XCX rose at the crack of dawn to reveal 5 categories of nominees on ABC’s “Good Morning America.” (See the full list of nominees below). It was also announced today on “GMA” that Charli XCX will perform for the first time on the AMAs. The American Music Awards will broadcast live from the NOKIA Theatre L.A. LIVE on Sunday, November 23rd (8:00-11:00 p.m. ET/PT) on ABC.

Iggy Azalea leads this year with six nominations. John Legend, Katy Perry and Pharrell Williams follow with five nominations each, while Lorde earns four nominations. Additionally, Beyoncé, Eminem, Imagine Dragons, OneRepublic and One Direction were nominated for three awards. Bastille, Drake, Luke Bryan and Sam Smith each receive two nominations.

The Toronto International Film Festival® today announced award winners from the 39th Festival which wraps up this evening.

The short film awards below were selected by a jury comprised of Franklin Leonard, founder of The Black List; Beth Sá Freire, deputy-director of the São Paulo International Short Film Festival; and visual artist Floria Sigismondi.

Hot Docs has wrapped its 21st edition with record-breaking audience numbers reaching an estimated 192,000. The 11-day event featured 452 public screenings of 197 films on 16 screens across Toronto, an internationally renowned conference and market for documentary professionals, and Docs For Schools, a phenomenally popular education program for youth. The Festival welcomed 176 guest filmmakers and 60 guest subjects from across Canada and around the world to present their films and take part in special post-screening Q&A sessions with audiences. Official film selections were chosen from a total of 2435 films submitted to the Festival.

2013 MTV Movie Awards – winners

The 2013 MTV Movie Awards took place last night at the Sony Pictures Studios lot in Culver City, California. Pitch Perfect star Rebel Wilson hosted the event.

Joss Whedon's The Avengers led the night taking the top prize Movie of the Year. It also won for Best Fight and Best Villain (Tom Hiddleston).

David O. Russell's Silver Linings Playbook also won three awards, all for acting. Jennifer Lawrence won Best Female Performance, Bradley Cooper won for Best Male Performance and the two shared the prize for Best Kiss.

Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained and Seth Seth MacFarlane's Ted both led with seven nominations coming into the night but only came away with one each. Django Unchained won for Best WTF Moment, while Ted won for Best Onscreen Couple.

Jameson Empire Awards 2013 – winners

Tonight at the Great Room at the Grosvenor House Hotel, London, the presentation for the Jameson Empire Awards took place, with comedian Ed Byrne hosting the evening's festivities.

Skyfall picked up Best Film, with director Sam Mendes also winning Best Director and a special Empire Inspiration award for good measure. The awards, voted for by fans, also saw The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey take Best Sci-Fi/Fantasy and Best Actor for Martin Freeman, while Jennifer Lawrence was voted Best Actress for The Hunger Games.

Elsewhere, Sightseers won Best British Film and Headhunters took Best Thriller, while Best Comedy went to Ted. Hammer's The Woman In Black was Best Horror, and its star Daniel Radcliffe won an Empire Hero prize. Best Male Newcomer was The Impossible's Tom Holland, while Samantha Barks was Best Female Newcomer following her turn in Les Misérables.

Kids' Choice Awards 2013 – winners

Nickelodeon held its ceremony for the 26th Annual Kids' Choice Awards tonight at the Galen Center in Los Angeles, California. Actor Josh Duhamel hosted the event. Performers included Pitbull and Christina Aguilera with "Feel This Moment" and Ke$ha with "We R Who We R" and "C'Mon".

The Hunger Games by Gary Ross was the winner of Favourite Movie. The series of books by Suzanne Collins also won for Favorite Book.

Kristen Stewart took two awards on her own. She won Favorite Movie Actress for The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2 and Favorite Female Buttkicker for Snow White and the Huntsman.

2013 Indie Music Awards – winners

The 13th Annual Independent Music Awards or SiriusXM Indies were handed out last night at the Kool Haus in Toronto. Nine of the 39 awards were handed out at the presentation. Live performers at the show included Cadence Weapon, The Wooden Sky, Diamond Rings, Matt Mays, Yukon Blonde and Metric.

The top winner of the night was Carly Rae Jepsen who claimed Artist of the Year to go with her wins for Single of the Year (Call Me Maybe) and Most Played Independent Artist or Group of the Year. Her win was greeted with boos by the live audience.

Metric had a good night, winning Group or Duo of the Year to go with a win for Best-Selling Independent Release of the Year for Synthetica. Their win and performance was enthusiastically received by the crowd.

The inaugural Africa Magic Viewers' Choice Awards – winners

The Africa Magic network held the first ever Africa Magic Viewers' Choice Awards this weekend over two nights in Lagos, Nigeria. The events were hosted by IK Osakioduwa and Wimbai Mutinhiri.

The South African film Otelo Burning by Sara Blecher was the night's top film winning four awards including Best Movie (Overall). It also won three craft awards for Best Art Director, Best Make-up Artist and Best Lighting Designer.

Also capturing four awards was another South African film, Man on Ground by Nigerian director/actor Akin Omotoso. It won Best Director, as well as Best Cinematographer, Picture Editor and Sound Editor.

2013 MTV Movie Awards – nominations

The MTV Movie Awards are just around the corner on April 14, but the nominations are right here, right now!

Leading the pack at this year's Movie Awards is Quentin Tarantino's Western epic Django Unchained, which garnered an impressive seven nominations, including the coveted Movie of the Year; the same can be said for Ted, which also received seven total noms, including Best Female Performance for Mila Kunis. Ranking third with six total nominations is Silver Linings Playbook, starring Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence.

Jameson Empire Awards 2013 – nominations

Empire Online has announced the nominations for the Jameson Empire Awards 2013.

Skyfall leads the pack with six nominations, followed by The Avengers Assemble and The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, both with five. Sightseers has four nods, while Life Of Pi, Django Unchained, The Dark Knight Rises and Dredd all have 3.

The public can vote for their favourites at http://www.empireonline.com/awards2013/. Winners will be revealed on Sunday, March 24.

Kids' Choice Awards 2013 – nominations

Nickelodeon has announced the nominations for the 26th Annual Kids' Choice Awards. Voting begins on Thursday, February 14 online in 22 categories.

Les Trophées du Film Français 2013 – winners

The 20th Trophées du Film français 2013 were presented by the magazine Le Film français at the Palais Brongniart in Paris.

The Trophée des trophées went to the latest James Bond installment Skyfall by Sam Mendes. The Trophée du film français went to the children's film Sur la piste du Marsupilami (HOUBA! On the Trail of the Marsupilami) by Alain Chabat.

The Trophée UniFrance Films which goes to the film with the highest box office outside of France went to the inter-racial buddy comedy Intouchables by Eric Toledano and Olivier Nakache. It was the main winner at last year's Trophées du Film Français ceremony.
