87th annual Academy Awards – nominations

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences unveiled the nominations for all 24 categories of the 87th annual Academy Awards. The announcement was made this morning by directors Alfonso Cuarón, J.J. Abrams, actor Chris Pine and Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs. For the first time, nominees in all 24 categories were announced live.

Leading the field with nine nominations apiece were Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's Birdman and Wes Anderson's The Grand Budapest Hotel. Next with eight nominations was Morten Tyldum's The Imitation Game followed by Richard Linklater's Boyhood and Clint Eastwood's American Sniper with six nominations. Each of these was nominated for Best Picture as well as Best Director, except American Sniper which missed out on the director slot.

The other Best Picture nominees were Ava DuVernay's Selma, James Marsh's The Theory of Everything and Damien Chazelle's Whiplash. The fifth Best Director slot went to Bennett Miller for Foxcatcher.

Canadian nominees include animation directors Dean DeBlois (How to Train Your Dragon 2) from Aylmer, Quebec; director Graham Annable (The Boxtrolls) from Sault Ste Marie, Ontario; and Torill Kove (Me and My Moulton) from Norway but now based in Montreal. Other Canadians include Craig Mann for Sound Mixing in Whiplash. The song Everything Is Awesome performed by Tegan and Sara was the only nomination for The LEGO Movie. Reese Witherspoon and Laura Dern were nominated for Montrealer Jean-Marc Vallée's latest film Wild.

Academy members from each of the 17 branches vote to determine the nominees in their respective categories – actors nominate actors, film editors nominate film editors, etc. In the Animated Feature Film and Foreign Language Film categories, nominees are selected by a vote of multi-branch screening committees. All voting members are eligible to select the Best Picture nominees.

Active members of the Academy are eligible to vote for the winners in all categories.

Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2014 will be presented on Oscar® Sunday, February 22, 2015, at the Dolby Theatre® at Hollywood & Highland Center® and televised live on the ABC Television Network. The Oscars, produced by Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, also will be televised live in more than 225 countries and territories worldwide.
