The top winner of the evening was 12 Years a Slave which took Best Picture. It also won for Best Supporting Actress (Lupita Nyong’o) and Best Adapted Screenplay (written by John Ridley).
However, Alfonso Cuarón's Gravity took more awards, winning a total of seven. It won for Best Director, as well as Best Sci-Fi/Horror Movie, Best Actress in an Action Movie (Sandra Bullock), Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Visual Effects, and Best Score (Steven Price).
American Hustle also acquitted itself well with four awards. Its wins were for Best Comedy, Best Ensemble, Best Actress in a Comedy (Amy Adams) and Best Hair & Makeup.
Forest Whitaker received the special Joel Siegel Award for his humanitarian work. Julie Delpy, Ethan Hawke and Richard Linklater were presented with the special Louis XIII Genius Award.
The Critics’ Choice Movie Awards are bestowed annually by the BFCA to honour the finest in cinematic achievement. The BFCA is the largest film critics organization in the United States and Canada, representing more than 280 television, radio and online critics. BFCA members are the primary source of information for today’s film going public. Eligible films were released in 2013.
