58th Idea Filmfare Awards – nominations

The nominations have been announced for the 58th Idea Filmfare Awards to honour the best of 2012 from the Hindi-language film industry (ie. Bollywood). This year, a golden base has been added to the award (known as the "black lady") to mark the 100th anniversary of Indian cinema.

Anurag Basu's romantic comedy Barfi! led the field with nine nominations. Its mentions included Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor (Ranbir Kapoor), Best Actress (Priyanka Chopra), and Best Supporting Actress (Ileana D’Cruz). The film was India's to the Oscars for the Best Foreign Language Film award but was not shortlisted.

Next with seven nominations was the late Yash Chopra's Jab Tak Hai Jaan. It did not, however, get nominated for Best Film or Best Director. Shah Rukh Khan was nominated for Best Actor and Anushka Sharma was nominated for Best Supporting Actress. Its five other nominations were for the music.

DGA Awards 2013 – Documentary nominees

Directors Guild of America President Taylor Hackford today announced the DGA’s nominees for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Documentaries for the year 2012.

“Whether shining a light on sweeping injustice or bringing us along on an intimate journey, the best documentaries challenge and enlighten us, and this year’s nominees are no exception,” said Hackford. “The powerful work of these nominated directors is a true testament to the skill and significance of non-fiction storytellers. Congratulations to each of the nominees on their remarkable accomplishments.”

Free screenings of Canada's Top Ten at PHI Centre, Jan 14-25

From January 14-27, 2013: a special selection of TIFF Canada's Top Ten feature and short films. The screenings begin tonight with a presentation of Xavier Dolan's Laurence Anyways. The film tells the story of a man Laurence who tells his girlfriend that he wants to become a woman.

All screenings are free and take place at PHI Centre, 407, Saint-Pierre Street, Montreal.

The program will also be traveling across Canada to theatres in cities such as Vancouver, Edmonton, and Ottawa.

Golden Globe Awards 2013 – winners

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association held the 70th annual Golden Globe Awards ceremony tonight at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler co-hosted the event and were quite good in their opening monoloque as well as throughout the night.

The big winners of the night were Ben Affleck's Argo and Tom Hooper's Les Miserables. Argo won for Best Motion Picture (Drama) and Best Director. Les Miserables won three prizes total for Best Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy), Best Actor (Musical or Comedy) for Hugh Jackman, and Best Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture for Anne Hathaway.

Django Unchained also won two awards. Quentin Tarantino was a surprise winner for Best Screenplay, and Christoph Waltz again won Best Supporting Actor as he did three years ago for Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds.

ACTRA Awards in Toronto 2013 – nominees

ACTRA Toronto is delighted to announce the nominees for the 11th Annual ACTRA Awards in Toronto. The gala industry event will take place at The Carlu on Saturday, February 23, 2013.

Three juried ACTRA Awards will be presented for Outstanding Female Performance, Outstanding Male Performance and Outstanding Voice Performance.

2013 Colors Screen Awards – winners

The gala ceremony for the 19th annual Colors Screen Awards took place today at Yahraj Studios. The event was hosted by Shah Rukh Khan.

Dominating the night was Anurag Basu's Barfi! with eight awards. It shared the top prize of Best Film with Paan Singh Tomar which took three awards. Ranbir Kapoor from Barfi! and Irrfan Khan from Paan Singh Tomar also shared the award for Best Actor (Male).

Barfi! also took prizes for Best Director, Best Background Score, Best Marketed Film, Most Promising Female Newcomer (Ileana D'Cruz), Best Jodi and Best Music. Paan Singh Tomar won its other award for Best Screenplay.

2013 Deutscher Filmpreis (German Film Awards) – longlist

46 films have been selected by the Deutschen Filmakademie (German Film Academy) for the longlist of films eligible for nomination in the upcoming 63rd Deutscher Filmpreis (German Film Awards) or Lolas.

Selected films included the English-language film Cloud Atlas by Lana Wachowski, Andy Wachowski and Tom Tykwer (who is German). Also included for eligibility is the German-language film Lore by Australian filmmaker Cate Shortland. It was Australia's submission to the Academy for Best Foreign Language Film but was not selected.

The German film Barbara by Christian Petzold which was shortlisted by the Academy was from last year's 62nd Deutscher Filmpreis. Although current Oscar-nominee Amour is a German co-production (with Austria and France), it was not included on the longlist.

2013 Jussi-palkinto (Finnish film awards) – nominations

Finland's Filmiaura ry (Filmiaura Association) has announced the nominations for the 67th Jussi-palkinto (Jussi Film Awards) for Finnish cinema.

Tied in the lead with eight nominations apiece were Antti Jokinen's Puhdistus (Purge) and Vuosaari (Naked Harbor) by Aku Louhimies. Each received nominations for Best Film and Best Director. Purge was Finland's submission to the Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film but was not shortlisted or nominated.

Also nominated for both Best Film and Best Director was Maarit Lalli with Kohta 18 (Almost 18). It was next with six nominations.

Filling out the Best Film category (which had 5 instead of 3 slots) were four-time nominees Miss Farkku-Suomi (Miss Blue Jeans) by Matti Kinnunen, and Niko 2 – lentäjäveljekset (Little Brother, Big Trouble: A Christmas Adventure) by Kari Juusonen and Jørgen Lerdam.

2013 ACE Eddie Awards – nominations

This morning, the American Cinema Editors (ACE) announced the nominations for their 63rd Annual ACE Eddie Awards.

The nominees for Best Edited Dramatic Feature were Argo, Life of Pi, Lincoln, Skyfall and Zero Dark Thirty. At yesterday's announcement, each received an Academy Award nomination except for Skyfall. The fifth Oscar nomination went to Silver Linings Playbook, which was nominated for the Best Edited Comedic Feature award from the Eddies.

Also receiving nominations in the Feature Comedy/Musical section were The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Les Misérables, Moonrise Kingdom and Ted.

Les Magritte du Cinéma 2013 (Belgian film awards) – nominations

Belgium's Académie André Delvaux announced the nominations this morning for the 3rd Annual Magritte du Cinéma for excellence in Belgian cinema.

Leading the field with eight nominations was Dead man talking by Patrick Ridremont. Three films tied with seven nominations each. They were 38 témoins (One Night) by Lucas Belvaux, A perdre la raison (Our Children) by Joachim Lafosse, and François Pirot's Mobile home. Each was nominated for Best Film, Best Director and Best Screenplay, Original or Adapted.

2013 Critics' Choice Movie Awards – winners

The Broadcast Film Critics Association (BFCA) held their ceremony tonight for the 18th annual Critics’ Choice Movie Awards at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California.

Ben Affleck's Argo captured the top prizes, claiming Best Picture and Best Director. It was an especially pleasing win for Affleck since he was not included among the nominees announced this morning for the Oscars. In his acceptance speech, he said "I'd like to thank the academy..."

Silver Linings Playbook captured the most awards. It won four prizes – Best Acting Ensemble, Best Comedy, Best Actor in a Comedy (Bradley Cooper), and Best Actress in a Comedy (Jennifer Lawrence). In addition to her awards for Ensemble and Actress in a Comedy, Jennifer Lawrence also won for Best Actress in an Action Movie.

BRIT Awards 2013 – nominations

The 33rd Annual BRIT Awards announced this year's nominations for the best in the British recording industry.

Emeli Sandé leads the field with four nominations including two for Single of the Year (‘Next To Me’ and ‘Beneath Your Beautiful’) as well as British Female Solo Artist and British Album of the Year (‘Our Version Of Events’).

Tied with three nominations each are British folk band Mumford and Sons and Mercury prize winners Alt-J.

85th Academy Awards – nominations

Nominations for the 85th Academy Awards® were announced today (Thursday, January 10) by this year's Oscar host, Seth MacFarlane, and actress Emma Stone. MacFarlane and Stone announced the nominees at a 5:38 a.m. PT live news conference attended by more than 400 international media representatives.

Academy members from each of the branches vote to determine the nominees in their respective categories – actors nominate actors, film editors nominate film editors, etc. In the Animated Feature Film and Foreign Language Film categories, nominees are selected by vote of multi-branch screening committees. All voting members are eligible to select the Best Picture nominees.

2013 People's Choice Awards – winners

Last night, the 39th annual People’s Choice Awards took place at L.A. Live's Nokia Theater.

Leading the field was The Hunger Games with five wins. Its wins were for Favorite Movie, On-screen Chemistry, Action Movie, Movie Franchise, and Face of Heroism (Jennifer Lawrence). In addition, Lawrence was crowned winner of the award for Favourite Movie Actress.

The award for Favorite Comedic Movie went to Seth McFarlane's Ted, while the Favorite Dramatic Movie prize went to The Perks of Being a Wallflower.

Robert Downey, Jr. won twice, with the awards for Favorite Movie Actor and Favorite Movie Superhero (as Iron Man). Chris Hemsworth who plays the Avengers character Thor was named Favorite Action Movie Star.

2013 Cinema Eye Honors – winners

The gala for the 6th Annual Cinema Eye Honors took place tonight at New York City’s Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria, Queens.

The top prize of Outstanding Achievement in Nonfiction Feature Filmmaking went to 5 Broken Cameras by Emad Burnat and Guy Davidi. The film portrays a first-hand account of the situation in Palestine when the village of Bil’in takes up nonviolent resistance after the Israeli army encroached upon its land to make room for Jewish colonists. That was the film's only prize, however, and it looked like it would be going home empty-handed until the final award was announced.
