Call for submissions: EURODOC Pitch, and One‐on‐One for Emerging Filmmakers

EURODOC PITCH and ONE‐ON‐ONE FOR EMERGING FILMMAKERS

Montreal, August 1, 2016 – Doc Circuit Montréal (DCM) is delighted to announce two exciting calls for projects: the EURODOC Pitch and the One‐on‐One for Emerging Filmmakers. Established québecois producers and emerging filmmakers are invited to submit their documentary projects by September 15th as part of these two pitching events.

We are now accepting submissions to the prized EURODOC Pitch! Five Quebec-based documentary producers will be selected for the opportunity to pitch live in the hopes of receiving a $4,000 grant and securing a much coveted slot for one of Europe’s leading training programs.

Call for submissions: Rencontres internationales du documentaire de Montréal (RIDM)


Submissions for RIDM 2016 are now open!

Quebec’s only film festival dedicated to documentaries, the Montreal International Documentary Festival (RIDM) presents the best reality-based films, including the works of established directors and new talents alike. Every November, RIDM screens approximately 140 domestic and foreign productions and hosts a dozen complementary activities such as workshops, master classes, debates and roundtables. The festival typically welcomes about 100 guests from outside Quebec, and hands out 11 awards selected by juries comprised of industry professionals.

Doc Circuit Montréal, the documentary market organized in parallel with the festival, hosts a dozen activities for documentary professionals, including workshops and presentations, and facilitates more than 1,500 business meetings.

Award winners of the 18th Rencontres internationales du documentaire de Montréal (RIDM)


The Rencontres internationales du documentaire de Montréal (Montreal International Documentary Festival or RIDM) will close tomorrow, Sunday November 22, after presenting 143 films and numerous parallel activities and events. The award winners for the 18th annual RIDM were announced this evening during the closing ceremony at Concordia University’s Alumni Auditorium (H110).

GRAND PRIZE FOR BEST CANADIAN FEATURE

Presented by TV5, the Grand Prize for Best Canadian Feature is awarded to Jean-François Lesage’s Un amour d’été, the jury particularly appreciated this “ode to coexistence and joie de vivre that freezes time. A subtly political declaration celebrating the happiness that comes from being together; a nocturnal interlude whose deep appeal to the senses is underscored by remarkable imagery.”

Doc Circuit Montréal 2015 Programming Announced


Doc Circuit Montréal’s (DCM) 11th edition will be held from November 14-18 2015. With over 30 events programmed and 100 local and international guests, DCM is a key market to documentary professionals now more than ever.

This year’s programming is more ambitious and broad than ever before, offering 3 initiatives for emerging filmmakers, 20 professional activities and 10 networking events. The revitalized team led by programmer Samara Chadwick has been attentive to the needs of the community. Says Chadwick: “This year, we conceived DCM’s event with a deliberate attentiveness to optimized networking formats, and oxygenated and unexpected discussions among major industry players.”

Doc Circuit Montréal’s 11th edition will address the key themes of Coproduction, Big Data, Impact Producing, Online Storytelling, and Strategy: everything from Format, to Festivals, to Financing, to Distribution. New formats include the 1:1 Meetings and the Roundtables, as well as the UXdoc Focus, which spans over the three days of programming. Returning this year are the celebrated Talent Lab, Cuban Hat and Eurodoc Pitches, the Beat Dox D+M event and DCM’s central event: the One-on-One Pitches.

Tribute to Chantal Akerman at the 18th Montreal International Documentary Festival (RIDM)


In light of the tragic death of filmmaker Chantal Akerman, the Rencontres internationales du documentaire de Montréal / Montreal International Documentary Festival (RIDM) will pay tribute to the distinguished member of the cinema community. Her final film, No Home Movie, presented in the official competition at the Locarno Festival this summer, will be screened at this November’s RIDM, as will a portrait of the director, I Don't Belong Anywhere - Le cinéma de Chantal Akerman, directed by Marianne Lambert, who will attend the festival. Festivalgoers will also have the chance to rediscover Akerman’s De l’autre côté, her 2002 documentary about Mexican migrants.

Call for submissions: Doc Circuit Montréal Talent Lab


Doc Circuit Montréal (DCM) is delighted to announce that the highly anticipated Talent Lab will take place again this year. This second edition will invite a select group of forty emerging filmmakers to three full days of specialized conferences and exploratory workshops with a roster of artists and experts from the RIDM and Doc Circuit Montreal programmes.

The Talent Lab will take place from November 14-16 2015 - on the final day, Monday November 16th, Talent Lab sessions will combine with DCM industry programs to encourage cross-pollination between emerging and established creators. A tailor-made mentorship program will also be offered to seven selected filmmakers.

The Talent Lab workshops will be held in the round, moderated by producer, consultant and former Hot Docs director of programming Sean Farnel and by the award-winning producer Isabelle Couture (The Amina Profile). The convivial format, the small number of participants, and the continuity provided by the moderators will allow for an intensity and intimacy to develop over the course of the 3 days of discussions and training. Sessions will touch on the intricate aspects of being a documentary filmmaker today: the issues and ethics of using reality as a medium, and insider advice on how to best integrate current industry structures.

Rencontres internationales du documentaire de Montréal (RIDM) announces 12 films in this year’s festival


The 18th annual Montreal International Documentary Festival (RIDM) will be held from November 12 to 22. As a sneak preview before the announcement of the full line-up, the festival is pleased to pre-announce 12 films from this year’s program.

INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION
This year’s international competition will include The Other Side by director Roberto Minervini. Selected by both the Cannes Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) this year, the film follows the daily lives of marginal people living in Louisiana, taking us a modern American abyss.

Homeland by Abbas Fahdel, named best international feature at the Visions du Réel festival, is a chronicle of life in Iraq before and after the American invasion of 2003. An epic work of incalculable importance, Homeland is an unprecedented journey inside a country’s descent into the chaos of war.

Call for submissions: Doc Circuit Montreal One-on-One Pitches for Emerging Filmmakers


Doc Circuit Montreal is proud to announce the fifth edition of the One-on-One Pitches for Emerging Filmmakers on Wednesday, October 7, 2015. Ten up-and-coming filmmakers will have the opportunity to meet ten established producers during a full-day event dedicated to documentary pitches. Doc Circuit Montreal is committed to offering a new generation of directors the opportunity to enhance their pitching skills and directly present their projects to film and television producers.

A networking and proposal activity, One-on-One Pitches for Emerging Filmmakers is designed to encourage the formation of new business partnerships and spark intergenerational discussions about the challenges, issues and changes facing the documentary industry. Filmmakers interested in participating have until September 15, 2015 to submit a project.

Working with several organizations, the RIDM will present a series of excellent documentaries in Montreal parks and other uncommon venues. It’s a great way to enjoy the summer while discovering the best that documentary has to offer.

2014 Rencontres internationales du documentaire de Montréal awards – winners


The 17th annual Rencontres internationales du documentaire de Montréal / Montreal International Documentary Festival held its awards presentation last night prior to the closing night screening of Spartiates (Spartans) by Nicolas Wadimoff. The film is an observational look at a mixed martial arts trainer in a rough neighbourhood of Marseille struggling to keep his school going while also being competitive himself.

The top prize of Best Canadian Feature went to Sol by Marie-Hélène Cousineau and Susan Avingaq, while the Best International Feature was Once Upon a Time by Kazim Öz. The Audience Award went to the timely and relevant Citizenfour by Laura Poitras. Amar Wala's The Secret Trial 5 was winner of the Magnus Isaacson Award, given in honour of the late, great documentarian for socially-conscious work of cinema by an emerging director.

2014 Rencontres internationales du documentaire de Montréal, Nov 12–23


The 17th annual Rencontres internationales du documentaire de Montréal / Montreal International Documentary Festival is coming up from November 12 to 23. With 141 films from 44 countries and more than a hundred guests, this year’s RIDM is more exciting than ever.

The festival will present 21 world premieres, 19 North American premieres, 21 Canadian premieres and 47 Quebec premieres. Quebec has pride of place in the line-up with no fewer than 35 local films of all lengths by our most accomplished filmmakers and our most promising up-and-comers.

The RIDM is honoured to open with the world premiere of Le nez by Quebec filmmaker Kim Nguyen. The Rebelle (War Witch) director takes us on a fascinating journey through the mysterious world of the sense of smell. Closing the festival is another world premiere: the new documentary Spartiates by Swiss filmmaker Nicolas Wadimoff (Clandestins and Aisheen - Still Alive in Gaza). We travel to the outskirts of Marseille, where a mixed martial arts instructor - a larger-than-life personality and a strict taskmaster - is struggling to keep his school open.

RIDM free outdoor summer screenings – lineup announced


The Montreal International Documentary Festival (RIDM) is proud to announce it free outdoor screenings for the summer of 2014. Working with several organizations and festivals, the RIDM will have a presence in several Montreal parks and other sites.

Throughout the summer, the RIDM will present a diverse line-up of documentaries, for free, in unconventional locations. It’s a great way to enjoy the warm season while watching the world’s best documentaries.
