Academy reveals 2016 Student Academy Award winners

The Academy has voted 17 students as winners of the 43rd Student Academy Awards® competition. The Academy received a record number of entries this year – 1,749 films from 286 domestic and 95 international colleges and universities – which were voted by a record number of Academy members. The 2016 winners join the ranks of such past Student Academy Award winners as Pete Docter, Cary Fukunaga, John Lasseter, Spike Lee, Trey Parker and Robert Zemeckis.

First-time honors go to Maharishi University of Management, DePaul University, Michigan State University, The Polish National Film, Television and Theatre School in Lodz.

All Student Academy Award-winning films are eligible to compete for 2016 Oscars in the Documentary Short Subject, Animated Short Film or Live Action Short Film category. Past Student Academy Award winners have gone on to receive 49 Oscar nominations and have won or shared eight awards in several categories, including Writing, Directing, Documentary Feature and Animated Feature Film.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences tonight honored 15 student winners from colleges and universities around the world at the 42nd Student Academy Awards ceremony, held at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. The Gold, Silver and Bronze Medal awards were announced and presented by actors Michelle Rodriguez and Jason Mitchell, Oscar®-winning director John Lasseter, and the Oscar-winning team behind the animated feature Big Hero 6, Roy Conli, Don Hall and Chris Williams.

The Student Academy Awards were established in 1972 to provide a platform for emerging global talent by creating opportunities within the industry to showcase their work. Past Student Academy Award winners have gone on to receive 47 Oscar nominations and have won or shared eight awards. The Academy has voted fifteen students as winners of the 42nd Student Academy Awards competition. The Academy received a record number of entries this year — 1,686 films from 282 domestic and 93 international colleges and universities — which were voted upon by a record number of Academy members. Past Student Academy Award winners have gone on to receive 47 Oscar® nominations and have won or shared eight awards. Previous winners include Pete Docter, John Lasseter, Spike Lee, Trey Parker and Robert Zemeckis.

Students will arrive in Los Angeles for a week of industry activities that will culminate in the awards ceremony on Thursday, September 17, at 7:30 p.m., at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. The medal placements – gold, silver and bronze – in the five award categories will be announced at the ceremony.

Call for submissions: 2015 Student Academy Awards

The Academy is now accepting entries for its 2015 Student Academy Awards competition. All Student Academy Award® winners become eligible for Oscars consideration. The 42nd Student Academy Awards presentation will be held on Friday, September 18, at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.

Beginning this year, students are able to submit their films online using FilmFreeway, a widely used festival and competition platform. Also new this year, the entry deadline has moved to June 1, and the awards ceremony date has been changed from June to September to better align the competition with the academic calendar.

2014 Student Academy Awards Finalists Announced

Forty-one students from 23 U.S. colleges and universities as well as 10 students from foreign universities have been selected as finalists in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ 41st Student Academy Awards competition.

The Academy established the Student Academy Awards in 1972 to support and encourage excellence in filmmaking at the collegiate level. Past Student Academy Award® winners have gone on to receive 46 Oscar® nominations and have won or shared eight awards. They include John Lasseter, Pete Docter, Robert Zemeckis, Trey Parker and Spike Lee.

University of Toronto Film Festival 2014, March 31

The University of Toronto Film Festival hosts its 13th annual edition of the student short film showcase tonight. Screenings will take place at Hart House, 7 Hart House Circle, in the downtown campus of the University of Toronto.

All screenings are free and open to the public.

Loop installations will be ongoing in the North Dining Room, South Dining Room and Board room. Screenings in the Music Room begin at 6pm, with a reception to take place at 7pm. Screening of the main portion will begin at 8pm (includes an intermission) followed by an awards presentation at 10:30pm.

2013 Student Academy Awards – winners

Sixteen students from colleges and universities around the world were honored tonight (June 8) as winners at the 40th Student Academy Awards ceremony at the Academy's Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. The medal placements were announced at the ceremony hosted by writer-director and 1978 Student Academy Award® winner Bob Saget. Writer-director Kimberly Peirce and actors Clark Gregg, Jason Schwartzman and Quvenzhané Wallis presented the awards.

This year saw first-time honors go to Elon University, Occidental College and the University of Michigan in the U.S. competition, as well as to Zurich University of the Arts and RITS School of Arts, Erasmus University College Brussels, in the foreign competition.

2013 Student Academy Awards finalists announced

Thirty-eight students from 17 U.S. colleges and universities as well as nine students from foreign universities have been selected as finalists in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Student Academy Awards competition. Winners will be brought to Los Angeles for a week of industry activities and social events that will culminate in the awards ceremony on Saturday, June 8, at 7:30 p.m. in the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.

2013 UofT Film Festival, April 1

The 11th annual University of Toronto (UofT) Film Festival takes place tonight and screens some of the best shorts and student films around. The event includes a reception and is free.

Films being screened include a modest short that I co-directed with Faisal Lutchmedial called Four Paws. It stars Joslyn Rogers and myself. Also screening will be three animated shorts by Toronto-based animator Nick Fox-Gieg – The Orange, Interregnum and the evening's finale More Than Winning.

Call for submissions: U of T Film Festival

The 12th annual U of T Film Festival is accepting short videos of any length, genre and topic.

Film/video installation art also welcome. Installations will be exhibited at our receptions before and after the screening. We will look at everything but priority will be given to submissions from University of Toronto students, staff, alumni & members of Hart House.

Call for submissions: 2013 Festival des Films du Monde (World Film Festival), Montréal

The Festival des Films du Monde de Montréal (Montréal World Film Festival) is now accepting submissions for its 37th edition of the festival in summer 2013. They are also accepting submissions for the sister festival, the 44th Canadian Student Film Festival which takes place during a part of the larger festival.

The goal of the Festival des Films du Monde de Montréal is to encourage cultural diversity and understanding between nations, to foster the cinema of all continents by stimulating the development of quality cinema, to promote filmmakers and innovative works, to discover and encourage new talents, and to promote meetings between cinema professionals from around the world.

Call for submissions: 2013 Toronto Student Film Festival

The Toronto Student Film Festival has put out a call for submissions for its 2013 edition of the festival.

The Toronto Student Film Festival is run by youth for youth. It accepts submissions from everywhere in the world and films can be shot on any format, whether it is shot on a cell-phone or an HD camera.

The Director, DOP, Writer and Editor of eligible films must be 21 years of age or younger on December 31st, 2013. For the age categories of 12 – 15 and 16 – 18, the Director, DOP, Writer and Editor must be the appropriate age on December 31st, 2013.

2012 DGA Student Film Award – winners

The Directors Guild of America today announced the winners of the 2012 DGA Student Film Awards for African American, Asian American, Latino and Women directors. The awards are designed to honor, encourage and bring attention to exceptional minority and women directors in film schools and select universities across the country.

“We congratulate the outstanding recipients of this year’s DGA Student Film Awards,” said DGA President Taylor Hackford. “The Guild recognizes and honors these young men and women directors who have shown exceptional talent and promise, and we hope that the attention brought by the DGA Student Film Awards will serve to both highlight their work and provide inspiration for the next generation of diverse talent in the entertainment industry.”

Call for submissions: 2013 YoungCuts Film Festival

The call for submissions has been put out for the 13th edition of the YoungCuts Film Festival. The festival takes place every fall in Montreal.

They accept films of up to 30 minutes in length from both students and non-students who are 29 years of age or younger on December 31, 2012. They prefer receiving their entries online and will contact you if they need a physical copy.

The Early Bird Deadline for submitting entries is January 31st, 2013. The regular deadline is March 31st, 2013, while the Late Deadline is June 15th, 2013.

Trinity Square Video, Toronto’s most important video-based artist-run center is proud to announce Video Fever, the first annual juried student video screening event. If you are in your 3rd or 4th year at a Toronto and surrounding area post-secondary institution and you make videos, you qualify. 

Submissions must be single channel videos under 10 minutes in length and will be selected for screening by the Trinity Square Video selection committee. All genres of video are accepted. The top three videos will be chosen by the Trinity Square Video jury and the artists will be awarded cash prizes, a membership to Trinity Square Video (redeemable after you graduate, if you like—when you’ll really need it!), various Trinity Square Video services like equipment use and workshops, and a portfolio review with Trinity Square Video’s programming director, Jean-Paul Kelly. The screening will take place downtown Toronto at the Trinity Square Video Gallery space on January 12, 2013. SUBMIT!

2012 Rebels with a Cause Film Festival, Oct 22-25

York University and the Ontario Public Interest Research Group (OPIRG) at York host their second edition of the Rebels with a Cause Film Festival starting tonight. All events are free.

Tonight's screening is Red Riot and features a collection of works that "confronts the systemic effects of patriarchy, from issues of violence towards Aboriginal women to gender-based oppression happening on our campus. Each short whilst acknowledging trauma, conveys a defiant spirit." After the screening, a panel discussion will take place with Jesse Gouchey, James Diamond, Chase Joynt, Deidre (D-Lishus) Walton and Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers (via Skype). The discussion will be moderated by Audrey Huntley.

Rebels With A Cause is a film festival organized for and by York University community members. The festival screens films that are artistically, politically and socially critical, combined with artist's talks, panel discussions, and q&a's. The films represent the voices of York students, alumni and faculty as well as independent filmmakers from the larger Toronto community. Rebels With A Cause aims to (re)introduce its audience to the political and social spheres at York and its community while inciting action and education through the avenue of film.

Academy Announces Medal Winners for 2012 Student Academy Awards®

Thirteen students from colleges and universities around the world were honored tonight (June 9) as winners at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ 39th Annual Student Academy Awards.  The medal placements were announced at the awards ceremony, which featured as presenters actors Laura Dern, Cuba Gooding, Jr., Greg Kinnear and Mena Suvari alongside Academy President Tom Sherak at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater.

2012 Ryerson University Film Festival, June 2-4

For the next three nights, Ryerson University hosts its own Ryerson University Film Festival (RUFF), an annual showcase of the graduating Film Studies class of The School of Image Arts. Now in its 15th year, RUFF provides a professional setting for the exhibition of 25 films created by a talented group of emerging filmmakers.

All screenings take place at TIFF Bell Lightbox (350 King St West) starting at 8pm. Each program features 8-9 short films, including fiction, animation and documentary.

Three-Day Passes are available online in advance (ruff2012.eventbrite.ca) for $30. Night of tickets will be sold at the Lightbox for 12$/night.

2012 DOC NOW Film Festival, May 28-June 1

Ryerson University's 2012 DOC NOW Documentary Media Festival began earlier this month with an exhibition of Rehab Nazzal's At Home, as part of the CONTACT Photography Festival. Tonight, the film festival portion of the festival begins at TIFF Bell Lightbox.

The opening screening will be Alternatives and features The Grass Is Always Greener by Arianne Persaud, Food for All by Marcelo Paolinelli, Brunswick St. by Halley Roback and Kevin Fraser's Analogue. Each film explores those with a different perspective on everyday topics.

The film screenings continue until Friday, June 1 at TIFF Bell Lightbox. The following week, there will be additional screenings of each program on June 8 and 9 at the School of Image Arts building in room 304.
