2014 Festival du Cinéma Latino-américain de Montréal, Apr 24-May 8

LATIN AMERICA LIVES HERE

From April 24 to May 8, Cinema du Parc is featuring a selection of the best Latin-American films, a few Spanish films, and a Portuguese film by a Brazilian director, which is opening the festival. Sixteen films were chosen from Berlin, Cannes, Toronto, Los Angeles, Buenos Aires and Guadalajara in 2013-2014.

Come discover the hidden wealth of talented directors, actors and actresses from countries whose films we don’t get to see all year long. As long as there isn’t a Latin-American movie on the bill in Montreal every week, a festival like this will always have a raison d’être.

Perpetual humiliation inflicted on his family by local thugs pushes a father over the edge in Alejandro Almendras’s unnerving psychological thriller, which reveals a decidedly raw side of revenge. Jorge is a hardworking family man, who lives with his wife and two of his three sons. He earns just enough to cover their basic necessities. One afternoon, while returning home from work, he is mugged by Kalule, a well-known delinquent from his neighborhood… This is only the beginning of the film.

At the police station, Sylvia and Bernardo, the parents, and Rosa, prime suspect and Bernardo's lover, give conflicting testimonies leading to the darkest corners of desire, deceit and wickedness in the relations of these three characters. This quirky story is sure to resonate with you once you've seen it. A great film that will be remembered for a long time.

He spends most of his time playing in a neighborhood indoor soccer league, and there, in a stroke of luck, his coach Berri offers him an opportunity to make some easy money...It is a complex film with a much deeper meaning that lies beneath the surface. A beautifully crafted motion picture.

When Salvador’s parents face unexpected economic hardship, it threatens to cut short their son’s London experience. Seduced by what the city has to offer, Salvador refuses to return to Chile. It is a very emotional and powerful film that deserves a lot of attention. With Paulina Garcia of Gloria.

SOBRE ELLA / MUSTH
WEDNESDAY APRIL 30 at 7pm, THURSDAY MAY 1st at 5pm
Mexico 2013. Dir.: Mauricio T. Valle. 98 min. With: Alejandro Camacho, Patricia Garza, Josemaria Torre Hütt. O.V. in Spanish with English s.-t.
For some, life’s a party full of joy, music, dancing and love. Sobre Ella is just that: a photograph of the color, light and texture that life carries. This is the story of how we learn to understand the consequences of fate, the bonds of friendship, the passion of love and the happiness of awakening every morning. The script is brilliant and gives food for thoughts. The movie relates to people who are stuck in life, dealing with difficult situations, people who isolate themselves.

SOMOS MARI PEPA / WE ARE MARI PEPA
THURSDAY MAY 1st at 7pm, FRIDAY MAY 2 at 5pm
Mexico 2013. Dir.: Samuel Kishi Leopo. 95 min. With : Rafael Andrade Muñoz, Moisés Galindo, Alejandro Gallardo. O.V. in Spanish with English s.-t.
Their first punk song is obscene and powerful. But now, if the four lads from Mari Pepa are to take part in a battle of the bands, they have a pressing need for a new song. They’re only half way on the road to fame when reality catches up with them: their first girlfriend, problems with parents – everything suddenly seems to conspire against them. This director has an imagination like no other. It's crazy, wild, imaginative. The plot is as open-ended as life itself when you’re sixteen, and the photography is as natural as though the protagonists were used to having a camera around all the time.

ARIEL
FRIDAY MAY 2 at 7pm
Québec 2013. Dir.: Laura Bari. 95 min. O.V. in Spanish with English s.-t.
Unwilling to paint a dark portrait, the director keenly and cleverly delivers an ethereal and impressionistic composite of what life can be like for people with unusual bodies. Between hope and resilience, direct cinema and storytelling, and the real and the imaginary, Laura Bari spent ten years filming the different stages of her brother’s struggle, creating this touching film.

PACHAKUTI 2012: EL CAMBIO / THE CHANGE
SATURDAY MAY 3 at 5pm
Argentina-Bolivia 2013. Dir.: Carlos Santos. 61 min. With interviews and public conferences by different people, Evo Morales and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bolivia, David Choquehuanca. O.V. in Spanish with English s.-t. Almost 10 000 people showed up at the Sun Island gathering for the beginning of a new cycle of hope, compassion and love with this date of December 21, 2012, defending this vision with the Mayan prophecies. A film that should be watched by anyone who considers themselves a fan of cinema, it is brilliant and gives food for thoughts. An exceedingly creative, charming, relevant and prophetic film.

SEX LOVE & SALSA
SATURDAY MAY 3 at 7pm, SUNDAY MAY 4 at 5pm
USA 2013 Dir.: Adrian Manzano. 92 min. With Adrian Manzano, Sofia Rodriguez, Susan Quinn, Gabrielle Ruiz. O.V. in English and Spanish with Spanish s.-t.
The story of Julian Suarez, 29 going on 30, who loves women so much he can't have just one. Three in particular have caught his eye at the moment, Genny, voluptuous, rambunctious, romantic; Ingrid, posh, daring, sophisticated, and Maria, artful, salsa dancer, and it seems Mr. Suave might have just met his match with this Maria... makes him wonder when is it really the right time to settle down?

SERÉ ASESINADO / I WILL BE MURDERED
SUNDAY MAY 4 at 7pm, MONDAY MAY 5 at 5pm
Guatemala- Denmark- G.-B.- Spain 2013. Dir.: Justin Webster. 85 min. With: Rodrigo Rosenberg, Eduardo Rosenberg, Claudia Méndez. O.V. in Spanish with English s.-t.
In May 2009, Rodrigo Rosenberg, a wealthy, charismatic lawyer went cycling near his home in Guatemala City and was murdered. Nothing unusual, as tragically Guatemala has a murder rate four times higher than Mexico’s. What was extraordinary is that Rodrigo Rosenberg knew, for certain, he was about to be killed. I Will Be Murdered is definitely a movie that needs to be seen to be believed. There are plot twists a-plenty and, without giving anything away, the resolution of the investigation is pretty darn crazy.

LA VIDA DESPUÉS / THE LIFE AFTER
MONDAY MAY 5 at 7pm, TUESDAY MAY 6 at 5pm
Mexico 2013 . Dir.: David Pablos. 90 min. With: María Renée Prudencio, Américo Hollander, Rodrigo Azuela. O.V. in Spanish with English s.-t.

Spain 2013. Dir.: Jose Luis López Gonzalez (catxo). 84 min. With: Melani Olivares, Adrian Lastra, Nuria Mencía. O.V. in Spanish with English s.-t.
A comedy about labor terror and moral precariousness. Black humor pervades this ‘day in the life’ of the unemployed, under-employed and unhappy employees of a Madrid temping agency. An homage to human resilience, a bubbly, feel-good tone. The director will present his film.

CLOSING FILM
WAKOLDA / LE MÉDECIN DE FAMILLE / THE GERMAN DOCTOR
THURSDAY MAY 8 at 7pm
Argentina 2013. Dir.: Lucia Puenzo. 93 min. With: Natalia Oreiro, Diego Peretti, Àlex Brendemühl. O.V. in Spanish with French s.-t.
Patagonia, 1960. A German doctor (Alex Brendemühl) meets an Argentinean family and follows them on a long desert road to a small town where the family will be starting a new life. Eva (Natalia Oreiro), Enzo (Diego Peretti) and their three children welcome the doctor into their home and entrust their young daughter, Lilith (Florencia Bado), to his care, not knowing that they are harboring one of the most dangerous criminals in the world. At the same time, Israeli agents are desperately looking to bring THE GERMAN DOCTOR to justice. Based on filmmaker Lucía Puenzo's (XXY) fifth novel, the story follows Josef Mengele, the "Angel of Death," a German SS officer and a physician at the Auschwitz concentration camp, in the years he spent "hiding", along with many other Nazi's, in South America following his escape from Germany. Mengele was considered to be one of WWII's most heinous Nazi war criminals.
