Out with Jonathan Robbins

Jonathan Robbins is dad in Out With Dad, the most successful Canadian web series today with over 24 million viewers across all platforms, averaging more than 300,000 views per month online, and attracting over 35,000 Subscribers on YouTube. The numbers are all the more impressive when you considered that the show is almost entirely audience-funded. The drama is about about teenager Rose coming of age and coming out of the closet with the support of her single father. At this Sunday's week's Canadian Screen Awards, Out With Dad is up for Best Original Program or Series produced for Digital Media – Fiction. Jonathan is also the creator of Clutch, a crime/thriller web series.

Motion Picture Sound Editors present the 2015 Golden Reel Awards – winners

The Motion Picture Sound Editors held their gala awards ceremony for the 62nd annual Golden Reel Awards last night. The event was held at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel and Suites in downtown Los Angeles.

The MPSE spread their awards around in all of the categories, choosing a different winner for each. For the main film prizes, American Sniper and Unbroken won the Feature English Language slots for Effects/Foley and Dialogue/ADR respectively. Birdman won for Feature Music, while Get On Up won for Feature Musical.

2015 Golden Reel Awards – nominations announced

The Motion Picture Sound Editors have announced the nominations in 20 categories for its 62nd MPSE Golden Reel Awards, honouring the best feature film, television, animation and computer entertainment work of the year.

“2014 was a fantastic year for sound,” said MPSE president Frank Morrone. “The advent of new distribution channels, streaming services and gaming platforms is creating additional opportunities for sound artists to practice their craft beyond the traditional venues of film and television. This year’s nominations reflect that change, spanning an amazing diversity of mediums and genres, all executed at the highest level of creativity. We are truly inspired and impressed by the work of our colleagues.”

This year's Asian-Canadian films at ReelWorld, a festival showcasing racial diversity on screen, includes three Toronto filmmakers: Johnny Vong whose short, The Marvelous Girl, premiered at Cannes, Austin Wong's short Gaysian, which challenges queer stereotypes, and Andrew C's feature Millions.

Millions actually collects episodes from its web series of the same name.  The movie and the series is an ensemble piece about a bunch of 20somethings in modern T.O. trying to strike it rich before they hit 30.  Brandon (Hubert Tran), who is frustrated working a dead-end 9-to-5 call centre job, is the movie's/show's anchor.  He still lives with his folks who are stuck in the Old Country, still eating rice for breakfast while resisting Western gadgets like the internet.
